BVI moving to adopt ‘CARICOM Standards for Teaching Profession’ to improve education system

Dr Natalio Wheatley

Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley has said he believes applying the CARICOM Standards for the Teaching Profession in the territory will allow the BVI to build resilience in its education system.

Dr Wheatley gave that indication during the opening ceremony of the workshop on Monday. The workshop is geared towards adopting CARICOM teaching standards locally.

He said if a better group of teachers are to enter the profession in the BVI, a teacher’s education programme with standards will be needed.

“We need a recruitment strategy underpinned by standards. We need an orientation and mentorship system that inculcates standards. We need an evaluation process based on commitment to standards and adherence to standards. We need a licensing system which is based on standards,” Dr Wheatley stated.

“If we want to see technology utilised in the classroom, that has to be apart of our standards. If we want to see a pedagogical approach that is student-centred and appeals to different learning styles, that must be tied to our standards. If you want equity and access in education [and] if we want better learning outcomes, that has to reflect in the internalisation of our standards,” he added.

Important that BVI’s education system evolve

Dr Wheatley also said it is important for the local education system to continue to evolve, develop and adapt to the growing demands of the economy and the social structure.

He said this can be done through the implementation of new programmes which will help to fill some of the present gaps that exist.

“This morning, I opened a work programme in the Seventh District focused on primarily young men, many who never finished high school. So as a district representative, I see first-hand the impact of those who have not been sufficiently served by our education and our social system,” he stated.

“We have another stratum of young people who need better preparation to compete in the main sectors of the economy because the industries are under pressure and performance is key,” the minister added.

Dr Wheatley further said that better student performances will also be needed in subject areas such as mathematics and science as the BVI’s future economy will depend heavily on those areas.

This is the blind leading the blind. Your teachers can hardly read, write and do basic math. How do you expect them to teach the children. School in the BVI is daycare until they reach the age to commit crimes. How sad for a Territory that wants to govern itself. How will you compete on the world stage?

Clearly there are innate and obsessive hatred for and with Black people within.

Why? What do you know about the teachers of this Territory, their educational background and training? Absolutely nothing!!

That statement has one purpose and that is to degrade and express deep hatred for Black people., and that is pitiful. How low can humanity go?

Indeed, the statement is callous, mean spirited, hated driven and reckless.

Clearly, if there were not hate in heart, there would be reason to live. Pity your kind.

Well done the Doctor Honourable Wheatley. We do look forward to having your vision materialize. What many do not understand is that your leadership is not base on the sweet taste of today, but rather on the purpose and demands of tomorrow. Continue being humble regardless of the low substance critics, because your silence weighs much more than their noise. While they continue to speak on how slow you are to act without them understanding why you make your decisions at the time you do, they ought to realize that only a fool runs into a place where the wise hops in with care. Continue hopping sir…

Let’s just say we need to start cleaning ? our own house before we start taken on any other standard/suggestions from regional or international bodies.
We have a ministry under you portfolio that’s been run into the ground and the CEO/head of that Department don’t have a clue as to why everyone is trying to get out.
She Mrs C G the CEO Needs to learn that’s it is a partnership and not a dictatorship. Educational officers and Teachers are under extreme pressure and stress in this new era of teaching.
Dealing with this CEO that was hand pick by the previous minister. It’s just a waste of time when you bring any ideas or suggestions to her it’s her way or no way

  10. J says:

Hon. Minister, your ministry also need to provide adequate resources. Over the past 10-12 years, the ministry has been providing fewer and fewer resources for teachers to work with. School are now expected to fundraiser or beg to attain resources (and yes, it was the same under NDP). One hand can’t clap. You need to create a balance. Your ministry needs to step and do it’s part. Equip teachers and schools with the much needed resources. Stop expecting them to beg or spend their personal funds.

  11. @bald head says:

You either don’t know Myron or just being a hater. Sounds like a hater to me actually. That’s all I got to say on this.
