BVI needs more nightlife for visitors — Hodge-Smith

Hodge-Smith.

Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture Luce Hodge-Smith has called for more nightlife and entertainment activities in the Virgin Islands, saying the territory needs to improve its offerings to keep visitors interested and encourage longer stays.

Speaking on the government’s Virgin Islands Voice programme, Hodge-Smith acknowledged that entertainment remains an area requiring attention as the government works to strengthen the territory’s tourism product.

“But we do have to increase our entertainment events to keep them. Because you go to other places and there’s a lot of nightlife,” Hodge-Smith stated.

“And I think nightlife is what we’re lacking in a sense for our visitors,” she added.

Her comments came in response to a question about whether the proposed National Cultural Arena could help improve overnight visitor stays.

Hodge-Smith said the government had received feedback about the range of activities available to tourists and recognised the need to expand entertainment options.

“So we need to enhance our entertainment activities to keep the interest of our visitors,” she stated.

She said the proposed cultural arena could improve the visitor experience by providing entertainment, though such activities need not be confined to one location.

The Junior Minister also discussed plans to encourage cruise passengers to return to the territory for overnight visits. She explained that Caribbean tourism destinations were increasingly focusing on converting cruise passengers into longer-stay visitors.

Hodge-Smith said tourists were also showing greater interest in experiences involving local culture, history, storytelling and food, rather than simply taking tours or visiting beaches.

The government recently presented plans for the National Cultural Arena at a public consultation, where participants offered suggestions about the proposed facility. Hodge-Smith said the plans included spaces for visitors to take part in cultural activities and experience aspects of Virgin Islands heritage. The discussion also addressed accommodation capacity as the territory seeks to attract additional visitors.

Hodge-Smith identified the proposed redevelopment of Prospect Reef, a planned 65-room development at Port Purcell, and expansion plans at Biras Creek and Maria’s by the Sea as projects under consideration or development.

She also encouraged Virgin Islanders to explore investment opportunities, including boutique hotels, as the government pursues airport expansion and seeks additional tourism investment.

The BVI recorded 1,071,716 visitor arrivals during the first nine months of 2026, including cruise passengers, overnight visitors and day trippers. Hodge-Smith said the government was working to increase overnight tourism.

But you, Ma’am, are in over your head. Everybody cannot lead and leading at this high level one has to be focused and intuitive and then one that delivers the needs detected. Our capital first needs a serious and proper handling on that issue at the head of Town, the sewage plant by the roundabout. The buses all have to drive right through the worst and ugly smell that we have to offer on this island. That needs to be fixed properly once and for all.

Night life is non-existent yes, but most cruisers, probably 80 percent of them will not leave the ship at night. So search for things that can be done for your people. The capital can be made a whole lot better. First, reroute the traffic back to where it would be alleviating that dangerous situation in our banking district and please take some pride and fix Main Street. It is awful, awful, awful.

Long stay visitors are at the sophosticated end of the scale. Hence, it is the quality of nightlife and entertainment that matters, not the quantity.

The highly celebrated cruise passengers do not stay overnight! Or spend money.

Vi people have the illegal strip clubs and illegal gambling that is the culture.

Overnight visitors want peace and quiet.
