BVI records 40th COVID-related death

The following is a media release from the Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health and Social Development is confirming the passing of one person on New Year’s Day due to complications of COVID bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 40.

The deceased is a 71-year-old male with multiple underlying conditions and long-standing medical problems.

Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone in expressing condolences to the family and loved ones on behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands said that he is deeply saddened by the loss of lives because of the coronavirus disease.

The Minister continues to call on the people of the Virgin Islands to adhere to established COVID-19 protocols and guidelines and avail themselves of opportunities to be vaccinated or receive their Pfizer boosters.

There are at the present time 12 patients admitted to the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital with COVID and on high flow oxygen.  There are no ICU admissions.

According to Dr. Georges, as of January 3rd there were 601 active reported cases of COVID with 268 new cases over the last three days.  Cases appear to be milder but it is still too early to form a strong opinion on the clinical characteristics of the outbreak.  Samples continue to be sent to CARPHA for genetic typing to determine if the Omicron variant is present.

“Persons are encouraged to take COVID-19 seriously.  Sick persons should isolate themselves and seek to get tested by rapid antigen test or PCR.  At this present time, we are recommending that persons isolate for a minimum period of 10 days and with resolution of any fever for at least 24 hours” Dr Georges added.

The CMO further stated that “all unvaccinated persons should get vaccinated and all persons who are already 3 months after their last vaccination should have a booster”.  “Higher levels of neutralizing antibodies in the population will both reduce spread and severity of illness at the individual and population levels” Dr. Georges said.

Please stay healthy and safe! Together we will get through this.

The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to improving the health of the people of the Virgin Islands.

Curfews are utterly useless safety theatre. They don’t prevent viruses because viruses don’t care what time it is and they don’t only come out after dark.

@when sounds so stupid. Talking about curfew. Like curfew stops a virus.

Anyway back to reality. I thought Dr Georges was following whatever CDC says. He and Malone. Well CDC says maximum 5 days isolation. CDC also says a CT score of.35 on test results. Why you all not following CDC when it is convenient?

The man did NOT die from covid!!!!!

  5. Pandora's Box says:

My condolences to the family for their loss.

However, the world’s media continues with Covid, Covid, Covid ——- No other health issue seems to matter. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and a myriad of other issues more dominant and destructive than Covid are swept under the proverbial rug in a tidal wave of media bull$hit while Flu and common Colds (that still very much exist) go unreported and forgotten!

I’m not saying don’t take Covid seriously, what I am saying is there are a thousand more pressing issues that the very health of our society is dependent on.

The world’s health organizations, and Governments needs to stop with the fear mongering and take a far more balanced approach. This Covid has been for my damaging to the psychology and day to day health of people than anything the media ever reports!

Seems no one can see the forest because of the trees!

  6. That's a lie says:

Is being old a condition of multiple medical conditions? Most every time there is a Covid death they spread news that the person didn’t die from Covid because they want to mess with people minds. The media need to be more responsible in its reporting. I am a Nurse at the hospital and the man died of Covid, point blank. Tired of all the negative energies in little Tola just to sell news. My condolences to the Family.

  7. Common sense says:

Ok, let me explain so it’s very easy to understand. After all, it’s really not that complicated. If you have a myriad of health issues, have a number of underlying issues and contract Covid most likely this virus will further weaken your immune system, therefore making it extremely difficult for your body’s natural defence mechanisms to kick in. Leading to possible death.
In conclusion, yes one may have cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, heart problems but when they contract Covid it attacks their already compromised immune system leading to possible death therefore Covid was the cause of their demise at the time of their untimely death. OK let’s understand that people!!!!
