Captains and Seafarers in the BVI have successfully completed the Human Element Leadership and Management Course (Operational Level) (HELM), Proficiency in Crisis Management and Human Behavior, and Crowd Management Training.

The training courses were facilitated in the British Virgin Islands for the first time by Jocelyn Maritime Academy Ltd. (BVI) and Glasgow Maritime Academy of Glasgow U.K.

The courses which were hosted in Jocelyn Maritime Academy’s Training Room in Fish Bay Tortola are approved by the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry and was delivered by Capt. Vinil Gupta, founder and Director of the Glasgow Maritime Academy in the U.K.

The five successful participants of the HELM Training were Kenric George, Lennie Hodge, John Hodge, Kenric Chinnery, and Brian Deane.

These captains work with Virgin Gorda Transport, New Horizon Ferry Service, and Road Town Fast Ferry.

The HELM course meets the mandatory requirements for training in human element, leadership, and management at the operational level as set out in the International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping Seafarers (STCW).

It provides the candidates with awareness and understanding of the key human factors influencing effective resource management.

The candidates acquired and developed the tools and practical skills to enhance their resource management capability.

Topics covered included situation and risk assessment, situational awareness, effective communication, cultural awareness, team work, leadership behaviors, and workload management.

Twelve seafarers also successfully completed the Proficiency in Crisis Management and Human Behavior, and sixteen seafarers completed the Crowd Management Training.

The successful candidates were Rodwin Williams, Michael Sam, Abraham Clarke, Mark Brutus, Royston Fraser, Dewayne George, Steve George, Kenric George, Adrian Fahie, Brian Deane, Jaime Scatliffe, Carl Stephens, Richard Baronville, Jason Levons, Shemarr George, and Shaun Scatliffe.

These seafarers now understand the importance of ship board emergency procedures, and know how to organize them.

They are trained to control the response to emergencies on board, and to control passengers and other personnel during emergency situations.

Further instruction included establishing and maintaining effective communications during emergency situations.

The seafarers are now knowledgeable in shipboard lifesaving appliance and control plans, and proficient in assisting passengers en route to muster and embarkation stations.

The candidates found the training to be informative, captivating, and enlightening; and expressed their satisfaction with the quality and level of training delivered.

They clearly are renewed in their passion and are now better equipped to perform in the management role required as captains aboard passenger vessels.

John Samuel Director of Jocelyn Maritime, expressed his gratitude to Capt. Gupta of Glasgow Maritime for agreeing to collaborate in the delivery and certification of this international level training in the BVI.

He also thanks Capt. Bala the Director and the staff of the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry for their work and role in certifying the training, and the BVI Marine industry for their support of their Captains and crews.
