BVI to launch climate fund at summit in Spain
The BVI is getting ready to launch its Climate Change Trust Fund at the upcoming Global Sustainable Islands Summit in Gran Canaria, Spain – a move that will officially open the door for donors to contribute and support climate resilience projects across the territory.
The launch, scheduled for April 21, marks the fund’s transition from concept to full operation, with officials confirming it is now ready to receive donations and begin financing projects aimed at strengthening the territory’s resilience to climate change.
At its core, the Virgin Islands Climate Change Trust Fund (VICCTF) is designed to mobilise, manage and deploy funding for climate resilience initiatives, particularly in areas such as infrastructure protection, coastal defence, renewable energy and environmental preservation.
Minister for Environment Julian Fraser is leading the official launch, describing the initiative as a critical step in overcoming long-standing barriers faced by small island territories in accessing global climate funds.
“For too long, small island territories have faced barriers in accessing the financing needed to protect our communities, infrastructure and natural resources,” Fraser said. “This fund creates a credible, transparent and locally driven mechanism to deliver climate finance where it is needed most.”
Those barriers have historically limited the Virgin Islands’ ability to tap into major international funding streams such as the Green Climate Fund, leaving a gap between available global financing and local needs.
With more than $5.5 million already secured through the Environmental Levy, the fund is now positioned to begin issuing calls for proposals later this year. Chief Executive Officer Chamberlain Emmanuel said the launch represents the point where “vision becomes action,” noting that the fund is fully resourced and ready to deliver tangible impact.

Wasting our money going to Spain but still open burning at Pockwood Pond?
How many times are they going to launch this one fund.
I would say at least one launch per continent – so far we have only launched in South America and Europe – so five more continents to go. The best thing that would happen is if they all got stuck on Antartica before they waste all of the funds…
Another fund that will be raided by crooked politicians
Here we go around road reef again. When will it end? Some years ago one of the members was in Egypt on a camel. What is the country gaining from all these elaborate trips? Is there a unit in government that make sure we know where all the conferences and summits are being held to make sure they attend? Up to now people in BVI do not even know how to separate household trash. This is as simple as it gets. So think on the worse.
The climate travel fund for our Elite politicians. Enjoy!!!
