BVIEC deploys local linesmen to assist the hurricane-hit Bahamas

This quartet of BVIEC linesmen has been deployed to The Bahamas to help restore their electricity infrastructure.

Four Linesmen from the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) departed the territory on October 7 to assist with the restoration of electricity on Abaco Islands and the surrounding cays in the hurricane-ravaged Bahamas.

The quartet, which comprises team leader Trevor ‘West’ Stevens, Jason Clyne, Damien Richardson and Shaquil ‘Shack’ Samuel, will be in The Bahamas for some 30 days.

“They will be there for at least a month to a month-and-a-half assisting other utilities in the region in terms of restoring power on Abaco and the surrounding cays and restoring the residents of Abaco lives back to some state of normalcy,” the BVIEC General Manager Leroy Abraham told BVI News following the local linesmen’s departure.

Abraham said the BVIEC immediately committed the team following the devastation caused to The Bahamas by Hurricane Dorian but was awaiting the approval from the hurricane-hit country before sending the team.

“It was only last week — I think it was Friday — that we were informed from The Bahamas Power & Light Company that they were now in a position to receive linesmen because one of their challenges was finding adequate accommodation for the various teams that would be coming in from the region to assist with the electricity restoration on those islands following Hurricane Dorian,” Abraham stated.

He also reflected on the good deed done by the Bahamians electricity team back in 2017 following hurricanes Irma and Maria when they deployed a team in the territory to assist with the restoration of the BVI’s electricity grid.

Abraham said it was only fitting the corporation to return the favour.

This is the third time in the last five years that a team from the BVIEC has been sent to the Bahamas to lend assistance.

According to Abraham, a team was sent in 2014 following Hurricane Bertha and again in 2015 following Hurricane Kate.

      STRUPE COMMENT
Besides complain about the charitable actions of OTHERS, what have you done? Have you lifted a finger other than to type STRUPE comments showing us all how selfish you are? You are a fantastic example of why the BVI recovery is slower than it needs to be. Everybody in a rush to get a hand out while they sit on their backsides and pass judgement about things they know zero about. Shame on you.

The other islands helped BVI after Irma and we should help them. Shame on you.

It is so good to see that the BVI Electricity Corporation’s team is off to help our Bahamian brothers in their time of need. Like us after Irma, the Bahamian people will be very appreciative of the extra hands to get their electricity back up and running. What goes round, comes round.

Kudos to the men who are going. Proud to see two of them are from VG too.

  3. Love My BVI says:

Great move. We would still be without electricity if we didn’t have help from our Caribbean colleagues. Glad to see that we are giving back.

  4. Did You Stop To Pray says:

Father in the name of Jesus, we thank you for your grace and your mercy that has kept us and sustained us in the aftermath of the storms, the tempest and the hurricanes.

As we seek to do your will and follow in your footsteps, we ask that you would take our brethren from these shores and protect them. We ask that you will not allow any foreign diseases to attack them, that they would embrace situational awareness at all times and they would be their brother’s keeper.

We look forward to their safe return to us at the end of their deployment and we endeavor to enlist them on our prayer list daily, in the name of Jesus we pray.
    AMEN
