BVIEC rolls out 12-month safety initiative | Workers being trained for worse-case scenarios

A number of safety initiatives are being undertaken within the BVI Electricity Corporation over the next 12 months.

This is according to Health & Safety Manager Melony James, who told BVI News the initiatives are to help ensure that workers execute their jobs across the territory without putting their lives at risk.

“What I’m trying to do initially is to raise a positive culture as it relates to occupational health and safety. That means ensuring that the needs as it relates to the health of the staff are taken care of, the safety concern — especially for our guys working in the plant and on the lines for the department — are also taken care of,” James stated.

She explained that workers will undergo training courses to equip them to handle worst-case scenarios, should any occur.

“There is also international certified training … We’ve partnered with the BVI Red Cross to do first aid and then it will continue with management training for senior management on how to manage safety. As we go on, it will be building on that platform.”

The 12-month approach started with the implementation of an inhouse newsletter entitled ‘Current Connection’, which James said is to help promote communication within the organisation.

“We try to highlight the positives from the various teams; training that they would have executed and anything that they would have done well as it relates to health and safety,” James told BVI News.

Teams from Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Tortola are expected to undergo regular training sessions over the next year to ensure that employees put safety first.
