BVIFA Men’s and Women’s Festival Cup kicks off this weekend

The BVI Football Association’s Men’s and Women’s Festival Cup kicks off this weekend at the National Stadium venue in East End/Long Look.

This is according to a media release from the BVIFA which said that full attention will be on the Women’s Festival Cup which is scheduled for Sunday, August 2.

“The Women’s Festival Cup will be run as a one-day round robin-style five-a-side tournament featuring four teams that will be drafted by national coaches on the morning of the event,” the release stated.

It added: “Check-in and warmups will begin from 11:30 am with the first matches kicking off at 1 pm. Round-robin games of 20 minutes (10 minutes each half) will be played throughout the day and the final match kick-off is at 3:30.”

Newly appointed head coaches of the women’s division Wayne Philips and Anna French said the tournament will be used to assist with the revitalisation of women’s football in the territory.

“The goal of the event is to revitalize and showcase women’s football within the BVI, identify and recruit talented players for the national program, and boost excitement for the upcoming women’s club competition,” French stated.

Meanwhile, the men’s competition will commence from Saturday, August 1 and run until August 4.

The BVIFA is inviting players of all skill levels to attend the tournament and participate.

They also said that supporters are welcomed, but will have to adopt the socially distanced measures which will be enforced.
