BVIHSA cops prestigious award for infection prevention

The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has earned international recognition after its original short film, A Symphony of Guardians, captured the grand prize at the 2026 APIC Film Festival, outperforming entries from healthcare organisations and infection prevention professionals around the world.

The award was presented during the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Annual Conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 15 to 17. The conference brings together healthcare experts from across the globe to share best practices in infection prevention and patient safety.

According to the BVIHSA, the short film was created to raise awareness about infection prevention by highlighting the role healthcare workers play in protecting patients, staff and the wider community through safe practices, teamwork and quality care. The production was written by Gevonie Percival, Administrative Assistant in the Mental Health Unit, produced by Infection Prevention Manager Rosa Ravariere-Seaman, and filmed and edited by Marketing and Public Relations Production Assistant Albert Cheraymond.

Ravariere-Seaman, who attended the conference to accept the award on behalf of the Authority, described the achievement as a collective success.

“This film was truly a team effort, and I’m grateful to everyone who worked with me to bring it to life. Their creativity, dedication, and support made this possible,” she said.

Director of Quality Rhonda Williams said the recognition reflects the organisation’s commitment to quality healthcare.

“We are incredibly proud of this achievement. It reflects the strength of collaboration across BVIHSA and our ongoing commitment to quality, safety, and excellence in care,” Williams stated.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. June Samuel said the award demonstrates the talent within the Authority.

“To have our work recognised on an international stage among entries from across the globe is an incredible honour,” Samuel said.

The BVIHSA said the award reinforces its commitment to strengthening infection prevention programmes while showcasing the Virgin Islands’ ability to compete successfully on the international healthcare stage through innovation and education.
