BVIHSA takes steps to increase healthcare salaries

The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is taking steps to improve salaries in the local healthcare sector.

The Authority has awarded a contract to Ernst & Young Cayman Ltd. to undertake a comprehensive compensation review and job reclassification exercise, saying this is part of broader plans to modernise its human resources framework and ensure a fair compensation structure for workers.

For years, the local healthcare sector has struggled to attract and retain qualified professionals because of the low salaries in the BVI compared to bigger countries like the US and UK.

The BVIHSA said the compensation review will put them in a better position to attract and retain skilled professionals while enhancing overall service delivery across both hospital and community-based healthcare settings.

Speaking on the significance of the contract, BVIHSA Board Chairman Ron Potter stated, “It gives me great pride to see this process move from intention to action. With Ernst & Young Cayman Ltd. now on board, we are setting the stage for long-overdue improvements that will directly benefit our hardworking staff. This is a vote of confidence in them and in the future of our healthcare system.”

The project will involve a detailed analysis of up to 100 roles, extensive stakeholder consultations, and benchmarking across five to eight comparable health institutions.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. June Samuel emphasised the transformative nature of the initiative. She said the project represents a pivotal moment in the evolution as a healthcare organisation.

A compensation review within the healthcare sector comes amid news that the BVI has been seeing an uptick in teacher applications and retention following pay increases that resulted from the government’s recently concluded compensation review for civil servants.
