BVIPA acquires Chateau land on VG to expand port facility

The British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) has acquired the Virgin Gorda-based Chateau beachfront property to expand operations on the sister island.

This is according to a media release from the BVIPA dated Friday, October 9.

The BVIPA said the purchase of the land is “to expand the Virgin Gorda port facility by separating the cargo and passenger ports.”

“Located in close proximity to the current St Thomas Bay facility on Virgin Gorda makes it the ideal location for port expansion. The separation of these ports has been a part of the BVI Ports Authority’s expansion plans for an extended period of time,” it added.

Land purchase at appraisal value

The BVIPA did not reveal the amount paid for the land within the release, however, they said it was purchased at the appraisal value.

“Prior to the acquisition of the land, the BVIPA requested an appraisal by one of the territory’s reputable appraisal companies. The BVIPA was guided by the figure provided by the appraisal company and moved forward based on information provided in the appraisal,” the BVIPA stated.

The entity further said the acquisition of the land is a step forward in their mission to provide superior quality seaport facilities and services in the territory.

“The BVI Ports Authority Board and management team are pleased that they have been able to accomplish this goal in the pursuit to keep the BVI moving,” the BVIPA added.

Government also intend to acquire Toad Hall Estate

This news follows the recent announcement by the Minister for Natural Resources Vincent Wheatley, who said that the government was working to expand The Baths, which is also located on the sister island.

Wheatley who is also the Representative for the Ninth District which includes Virgin Gorda said that his government was in the final stages of acquiring the Toad Hall Estate to expand the territory’s leading tourist attraction.

He said the expansion of The Baths is necessary for improving the overall experience at the facility since numerous reports had suggested that the current space had started to diminish the experience of visitors.

Compounding the errors of the past 50 years. In my humble opinion Manchioneel Bottom is the only solution to Port Expansion on Virgin Gorda.Dancing around the problem is a waste of money..the ferry boats today are too large to comfortably operate in that restricted space..

@ Xpress ur self you on point. There are design plans and the funding available for the development of the Sea & Airports on VG. The Govt.is refusing to let VG bloom into the future and create jobs for her people. they just promising a bright future & better days for 40+ years. It’s time to wake up people and take back control of VG! Every time the govt comes to do anything here they make the situation worst than before! Lee road, dock/port, Admin, Roads, Schools & clinic ect.
Look at the big show that they kept for the clinic in 2019, any body get a tablet or band aid from inside there yet? Time to stop the show boating n posting on FB and fix the d**n country that we put you there to do!

Usually when government bodies purchase land the prices are known to the public at the time of the sale. Has anyone ever noticed whenever the British Virgin Islands Government buys anything the tax payers never get the the sticker price until days or months later sometimes having to prod to even get a straight answer………………….

      Getting the answer is easy.

Just start a rumour saying it costs $xxx and they come with a press conference to shut the rumour down and make a big deal about the true cost.

They are quicker to respond to clear up a rumour than simply providing the information in the first place when asked.

We, i am all for development and progress, but it is totally unfair, heart breaking and mind blowing that one who has worked for decades and an entire career without getting his due wages can see so much being spent while none goes to the little man who has contributed his entire life to country. It saddens to the point of tears, disbelief and worst.

Indeed, some people are not worh nothing in the eyes amd minds of some.

If I remember clearly these lands were leased to to be used by the Government. So could be that the government used the first option clause “if being sold” in that lease to purchased these properties. They have had a proposal to develop theses lands long before now.
