BVIPA finally fills Oleanvine Maynard’s position

Pickering

Akeem Pickering has been appointed as Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA), almost two years after former managing director, Oleanvine Maynard, was arrested on drug charges in the United States.

Pickering, who has served as Acting Deputy Managing Director at the BVIPA previously, will start his new tenure effective November 1.

His appointment and corresponding benefits were approved by the Cabinet earlier in October, for an initial period of two years.

As the Managing Director, Pickering is tasked with the leadership and direction of the Authority’s business operations and is also responsible for overseeing the Authority’s workforce.

His position is a powerful one, which Maynard is accused of attempting to use to smuggle tonnes of cocaine through the BVI’s borders. However, Maynard, along with her son Kadeem Maynard and former Premier Andrew Fahie were all arrested by US Drug Enforcement Agents who had gone undercover to catch the trio in the act of smuggling cocaine.

The Maynards have pleaded guilty to the charges against them while Fahie is on house arrest in Florida as he awaits trial.

After Maynard’s arrest, several persons acted in the Managing Director post but none was fully appointed. The BVIPA previously told BVI News that their delay had nothing to do with Maynard’s incarceration as they were simply trying to find a suitable long-term replacement.

You have the advantage that no matter what happens you leadership of the BVIPA is likely to be better than Maynard’s ever was – everything she was appointed to run – BVIPA, Labour etc – was a disaster under her management.

    • Too much negativity and jealously says:

Can we in the BVI ever feel good about someone’s accomplishments? Is this country so full of negative thinking persons that we do not believe that someone can be driven to work to obtain things lawfully.
This young man was not working for government but self employed and driven and while you were slacking (maybe) he was gainfully carry out his jobs with various organisations and the private sector to ensure he has an income.
Why do we persist in soiling people’s reputation? Is it where – if I cannot accomplish it, others cant unless they are doing something illegal? Soiling someone’s reputation is a serious matter for some individuals cherish a good name above all and aspire by God’s grace to keep it so their family can hold their heads high. This man has a family and young children, plant positive fruits and not weeds in the mans’ life. There is a saying : If you cant say anything good, dont say anything at all.

We try and bring down each other too much in the BVI, it is a TOXIC island to live in. May God have mercy on us all so we can only give word of encouragement and lift each other up instead of bringing each other down. Maybe then we will have a country that we can feel proud of.

His six figure a year Port’s salary plus allowances isn’t quite the average civil servant salary.

Why would travel allowance be granted though if one is given a government vehicle for travel? Travel Allowance should be if utilizing your own vehicle.

So Michael Mathews can come to the BVI work for less than 5 years and purchase a million dollar home on a civil servants salary but a BVIslander can’t?

Wishing him the best!….That being said we need a system where others are checking the books and keeping an eye out to reduce temptation.

What kind of headline is that. Should it not read “The BVIPA finally fills the position of Managing Direction?”

do something about these erratic ferries. Weekly cancellations, sorry for the inconvenience excuses and just plain unreliable.

  8. Congrats is in order. says:

May I suggest that the new boss make every effort to push for x-ray technology at ports to screen all packages and containers coming into the territory for drugs and guns if not in place already. It’s worth the effort and investment.

We have a serious problem in this country relative to drugs and guns entering the country. Every effort has to be made to reverse this trend.

I don’t wish to speak for bvinews as they can speak for themself. However, I would think it is not this news site job to publish the “best picture” to the world of anyone in the news.

We have a tourism board for a reason. I presume this site found the best picture they could. Who cares really about what picture gets posted? It is what is is.

Stay focus: Brother got a new gig, and that’s all that matters imo.

      • @ “@anonymous” says:

You’re so wrong about the photo not being important…it is important to display a professional image with a job.

Tourist Board has nothing do with his photo or appointment. He works at Ports Authority.

    • @ Anonymous says:

That’s the first thing I thought …could have sourced a professional photo.
