BVI’s biggest mysteries for 2025
As 2025 draws to a close, a number of major national issues remain unresolved, with key details either undisclosed or only partially explained. Together, they have fuelled public frustration, speculation, and growing calls for transparency across the territory:
1. The Bank of Asia Saga
Despite the winding down of the Bank of Asia, serious questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding the approximately $5 million in public funds that are unaccounted for. The public is still not certain who authorised the deposit into the failing bank, whether warnings were ignored, and whether any officials will ultimately be held accountable for decisions that led to the bank’s collapse.
2. Jacqueline Vanterpool’s Demotion as Acting Police Commissioner
The abrupt demotion of Jacqueline Vanterpool from the Acting Police Commissioner role has never been fully explained. Governor Daniel Pruce has cited administrative reasons, but speculation persists about internal disagreements and whether Vanterpool’s alleged pushback against the proposed vetting process led to her professional demise, especially given reports of strong institutional support for her.
3. The Escape of Two Prisoners from HM Prison, Balsam Ghut
The escape of inmates Jose Almestica and John Burgos from Balsam Ghut exposed alarming weaknesses in prison security, yet key details remain hidden. The public still does not know how the escape occurred, whether it involved internal negligence or assistance, or if anyone will take disciplinary action in the aftermath.
4. Baroness Margaret Hodge’s Fact-Finding Mission
The UK’s anti-corruption champion Baroness Margaret Hodge paid a visit to examine the BVI’s financial services sector and progress on publicly accessible registers of beneficial ownership but little concrete information has followed. Residents remain uncertain about the concerns raised with UK officials, what recommendations were made behind closed doors, and whether new external pressures on the territory’s financial autonomy are imminent.
5. The Albert, Erickson and Noel murders
The killings of Erik Albert, Nyron Erickson and Quentin Noel remain unsolved, leaving families without answers and communities uneasy. Police have shared limited information, few arrests and leads have been announced, prompting questions about investigative capacity, witness cooperation, and whether fear is hindering justice.
6. Persistent Water and Road Woes
Despite years of promises and emergency interventions, water shortages and deteriorating road conditions continue to disrupt daily life. Residents are still asking why long-standing infrastructure failures persist, how public funds are being prioritised, and when permanent solutions will replace temporary repairs.
7. The True Cost of Government’s Travel Expenses
While overseas travel by ministers and senior officials is often justified as necessary for diplomacy and development, the total amount spent this year by the Wheatley administration remains unclear. The absence of a comprehensive, publicly itemised figure has left residents questioning whether costs are reasonable and whether greater transparency is being avoided.

HOA what a fine job you’ll are doing both on and off the islands!
Dear BVI News
You have made a reporting error with point #2- “Jacqueline Vanterpool’s Demotion as Acting Police Commissioner.”
Please correct – she went back to her substantive position.
Thank you
– Why has the BVI not prepared audited financial accounts for > 10 years and why does the Premier think this is normal?
– Why is the picture of convicted drug trafficker Andrew Arturo Fahie still up on the HOA
– Who runs this country (i.e. as we are a Narco State who is really in charge?)
Without a proper franchise where people who actually pay taxes get to vote there will be no scrutiny, and corruption and incompetence will flourish.
Word is the BOA deposit was $10 million. And what about our brother FM. No justice for him or his family captains of both boats walking free. Tall white captain not even guilty of leaving the scene of the accident.
It was a BVI jury that acquitted him though, wasn’t it…
SECRET AIPORT PLAN
The Biggest SECRET of them all BVI News hasn’t heard of it.
BANK OF ASIA
$10 MILLION NOT $5 MILLION, why cant the news sites get the real story.. ask pink lips?
I just came from Labour and spent 2 minutes to pay a work permit! Customer Service has drastically improve in Government and that is something to be proud of!
Biggest mystery . Why are we driving on such sh** roads???
That was a accident, we all know they happen sometimes by accident (or it’s a Xmas gift , or who you were lucky to meet there
Address the Taxi service at the Pier park to this list. Operators respectos no one and do as they please. When the port Authority try to discipline after security reports the Bosses and Minister Overtime decisions. Fix that disgusting debacle.
Also still a secret. What was the outcome of the BVI Music Festival held in May 2024? Up to now no reporting on the outcome. Did the Territory benefit from the investment the government made in the Vybes Kartel concert held in March 2025? Nothing has been said about that either. And of course nothing so far of the outcome of the 500,000 plus spent to bring the Ubersoca cruise here. That was over a month ago. Did we make our money back and then some as the Junior Minister Luce Hodge Smith said would happen? Nothing reported on how these people have spent OUR money on these three initiatives
We enable and support the dastardly bold disgraceful disrespect and irresponsible behaviour of these duly elected members.
It can only become worse if these VI were to become
independent.
The ship is sinking and there is fire on the mountain.
