BVI’s Donelle ‘Phyzic’ Smith gets major highlight in US media

Donelle “Phyzic” Smith

Donelle “Phyzic” Smith, a talented mixing engineer, was yesterday featured in the California Gazette, highlighting his innovative approach to music production and his rise in the international music scene.

This highlight follows Smith’s top moment last year, when he won Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for the Barbie Album at the 66th Grammy Awards.

He is the first Virgin Islander to have won a Grammy Award.

Yesterday’s feature emphasizes that at just 25, Smith’s talent is already turning heads. He has worked with major artistes like Soulja Boy and Polo G and a host of others as he continues to distinguish himself in a competitive industry.

Smith’s journey from the British Virgin Islands to California reflects resilience, determination, and ambition. Overcoming early challenges, including periods of homelessness, he has carved out a space for himself among the world’s top engineers.

“Focus on your journey because that’s what truly makes you unique,” he tells aspiring creatives — a message that resonates with youngsters across the BVI community.

His recognition in a major U.S. publication is more than a personal milestone — it’s a moment for the territory.

Smith is among a growing list of young Virgin Islanders like track athletes Kryon McMaster and Adaejah Hodge, Basketballer D’Moi Hodge, and Long jumper Chantol Malone who are showcasing Virgin Islands pride globally.

As he continues to work on major projects and inspire the next generation, his story is a reminder that BVI youth have what it takes to leave an indelible mark far beyond the territory’s shores.
