Cameras capture burglar twice in separate break-ins

Wilbert Pickering

A resident of East End who was caught on camera breaking into two business establishments months ago has pleaded guilty.

Wilbert Joseph Pickering answered to the burglary charges when he appeared before Magistrate Giselle Jackman-Lumy on Thursday.

The court heard that on the December 29 last year, Pickering burglarized A.M Distributors in Parham Town.

He stole three packs of condoms, three packs of incense, a soft drink, and roughly $50 in coins from the business place. The total value of stolen items amounted to approximately $75, the court heard.

It is said that he gained access to the building through a window and was identified as the burglar from surveillance footage.

He was arrested on January 8 and granted bail.

The other burglary took place on April 18 of this year when Pickering reportedly broke into Marlo’s bar in Long Swamp, Tortola.

He gained access to the building through a left side-door, the court heard.

Once inside, he reportedly took a beer from the refrigerator and $15 that was left outside the establishment’s cash register. The court was told that the offender made unsuccessful attempts at opening the cash register.

Like the previous burglary, Pickering was again captured on surveillance footage.

The matter was reported to the East End police station on April 28 and he was subsequently arrested and charged. He has been on remand since.

His attorney Patrick Thompson told the court that his offences fell on the lowest end of the burglary scale. He noted that his client has spent more than five months incarcerated so he should be released for time already served at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Thompson also pointed out that his client did not destroy property during the burglaries.

Pickering will be sentenced on October 18.
