CARICOM urged to move faster on AI and digital transformation

Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell

CARICOM leaders are being urged to move quickly to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) and equip young people with the skills needed to compete in a rapidly changing digital world.

Speaking at a recent CARICOM on Information and Communication Technology, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said the region must accelerate its digital transformation if it hopes to remain competitive and relevant in the global economy.

Mitchell, who has responsibility for science and technology in CARICOM, said AI has the potential to improve public services, boost productivity and create entirely new industries across the Caribbean. However, he stressed that its development must be guided by fairness, trust and ethical standards.

The Grenadian leader also highlighted the importance of preparing young people for the digital economy through greater investment in digital skills training, cybersecurity and modern technology infrastructure.

“We must move decisively from policy discussions to measurable implementation and outcomes to build a CARICOM digital economy,” Mitchell said.

He warned that small Caribbean states cannot afford to tackle major digital challenges alone, especially as global rules surrounding AI, digital trade, data governance and internet governance continue to evolve. According to Mitchell, stronger regional cooperation is essential if CARICOM is to safeguard its competitiveness, resilience and sovereignty amid growing economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.
