Cashier faces multiple theft charges | Placed on $40K bail

Jakeya Fergus

An 18-year-old Virgin Gorda resident was placed on $40,000 signed bail after she reportedly charged multiple items to a debit card belonging to a Colombian native.

Charged with three counts of theft is Jakeya Fergus.

She was not required to plead when she made her first appearance before Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo on Monday.

Allegations

The court heard that earlier this year, the complainant used his bank card to perform a payment transaction at a local supermarket chain where Fergus was employed as a cashier.

On February 7, when he attempted to withdraw cash from an automated teller machine — more commonly referred to as an ATM — he was unable to do so.

The court heard that the baffled man then paid a visit to the main branch on Tortola to make inquiries where the discoveries were made.

A report was subsequently made to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, who launched an investigation into the matter.

The accused was subsequently arrested and charged with the aforementioned offences.

Accused allegedly purchased designer earrings, food

The court heard that the accused charged food and designer earrings to the card.

The first offence occurred on January 28 this year with the purchase of a pair of Gucci earrings valued at $200.

The accused reportedly read the particulars of the card from her cellphone and signed the receipt after informing the cashier that she had forgotten her card at home.

The court heard that the second offence occurred on January 29 while the third occurred on February 13.

She reportedly purchased a round trip ticket to Virgin Gorda for $30, bought a meal from a Virgin Gorda-based restaurant valued at $17.50 and another transaction valued at $219.

The court heard she told the various business places that the card was either broken or that it belonged to her boyfriend.

Attorney Patrick Thompson represents the accused.

I also had no idea this was allowed. If that is legal I needs to change. If not then who ever accepted the payment method needs to be charged something.

She assumed because he’s a foreigner that he was rich and would not notice the money missing. She may have gotten away for longer time if that was the case.

Diseased people. 18 fresh out the door. I suspect many of these criminals have mental problems. And see no consequence for their actions. I am sick of them.
