Caught on camera: Scooter thief fined $1,000

A man was fined $1,000 after he was caught on surveillance camera footage stealing a scooter from OneMart’s parking lot on September 29 last year.

Charged with theft is Akeem David.

He was fined after pleading guilty during his appearance before Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo on Tuesday.

He has until March 13 to pay the fine. He was also ordered to pay a $100 compensation for damaging the scooter.

What the court heard happened

The court heard that on the day in question, the rightful scooter owner parked the bike in OneMart’s parking lot where he is employed.

The scooter was parked in such a way that it was concealed behind a company bus. When his shift ended at about 2 pm, he returned to the parking lot to retrieve the scooter. However, it was nowhere to be found.

He then returned to his workplace and reviewed the surveillance footage of the area where the scooter was concealed. While viewing the tapes, he noticed two men loitering around the now-missing scooter.

One was wearing a black T-shirt, and the other had a white T-shirt.

The court further heard that the man dressed in the white shirt broke the security lock on the scooter while his companion rode it away towards the Purcell Estate area.

The matter was reported to the police who then launched an investigation. David was later found with the scooter at an apartment building.

He was subsequently taken to the Road Town Police station where he was arrested and charged.
