Cavaliers still on top, only unbeaten team in T20 tournament

Cavaliers Cricket club has proved they are the team to beat after pulling off a 14-run victory against Police to remain the only unbeaten team in the 2019 BVICA-NAGICO T20 Tournament in honour of Ralph O’Neal.

Playing in the first match at the Greenland Recreational Ground on Sunday, May 5, Cavaliers posted 207 for 8 from their 20 overs after being sent into bat first.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Gopaul Boodram top-scored with an unbeaten 40 runs from 14 balls including four 4s and three 6s while fifth batsman Janarine Persaud followed with a quick knock of 36 from 19 deliveries.

For Police, Kellon Landon had the best bowling figures ending with two wickets for 23 runs from his four overs bowled.

Faced with a huge total on the board, Police in a strong reply still fell short, managing only 193 for 2 from their 20 overs to lose by 14 runs.

Nonetheless, their batting lineup showed strong resistance despite not achieving the required total with opening batsman Collis Frazer and Jamal Mickle contributing a huge unbeaten third wicket partnership of 113 runs.

Frazer led from the start and ended unbeaten on 84 runs from 63 balls with seven 4s and six 6s while Mickle tallied 64 from 31 deliveries including seven 4s and five 6s.

This victory cements Cavaliers at the top of the point standings with 18 points.

Knights vs Vikings

Meanwhile, in the second fixture of the day, Royal Knights suffered their first defeat of the competition after losing by just two runs against Vikings in a close encounter.

Sent into bat, Vikings posted 200 for 8 from their allotted 20 overs with player of the match Junnic Mingo top-scoring with a brisk 81 runs from 36 deliveries including seven 4s and seven 6s.

Anthoney Slowley was the pick of the bowlers for Knights, taking two wickets for 34 runs from his four overs bowled.

Chasing 201 runs for victory in their reply, the Royal Knights were unsuccessful, managing only 198 for 7 from 20 overs to give Vikings the victory.

Wayne Richards top scored with 56 runs while captain Joemal Lafleur followed with 40 runs.

This result sees Royal Knights and Vikings both with 12 points but Knights posses a superior net run rate of +1.35 to sit in second position in the point standings while Vikings sit in third.

Round Three of matches will be concluded on Sunday May 12, with Grenada taking on VG Spartans in the first game at 9 am and Vincy up against RTW in the 1:30 pm fixture.
