Cindy explains absence at ‘No UK rule’ protest

Cindy Rosan

Prominent social and political activist, Cindy Rosan said it was not accidental she was absent from yesterday‘s protest against the Commission of Inquiry’s (COI) recommendation for UK direct rule of the BVI.

Rosan has been a staple in the political activism space in the territory over the past few years, and has been very vocal about her Opposition to corruption, particularly in the BVI’s political arena.

But while speaking on JTV’s The Big Story yesterday, Rosan said the circumstances that led to yesterday’s demonstration was what she had been advocating against all along; without any support from those in attendance at yesterday’s protest.

“A lot of persons that are involved in organising this march and a lot of people that would’ve turned out to this march, we’ve reached out to on many occasions to say, ‘there are a lot of things going wrong in the territory, we need to speak with you, we need an audience with you and they never showed up, they never gave us the time of day,” Rosan stated.

She continued: “We were trying to actually stop where we are today and we just couldn’t get anything out of those people. And so, I find their outrage displaced.”

According to the social activist, another issue that prevented her from joining the protest surrounded the reaction to Premier Andrew Fahie’s arrest on charges of money laundering and drug trafficking.

“Some of the people organising this march and supporters of this march, and some of the most prominent people in this society who were there — including the government of the Virgin Islands — have yet to denounce the [alleged] actions of the Premier, they have yet to acknowledge the ramifications of his decision on this territory and I felt that I could not stand with that today,” Rosan argued.

We are sick as a people

She also disagreed that the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) denounced the Premier’s actions when they called for his resignation at the weekend. Rosan described that action as a ‘coup’ that the VIP tried to pull on the nation.

“Asking for someone’s resignation is not the same as saying, ‘I denounce what you did’,” she stated. “It says that well, ‘you did that, we need to replace you and move forward’. But do you acknowledge what he has done, do you denounce it?” Rosan stated.

She made reference to the UK’s claims that corruption is endemic in the territory and said if persons could not see that there is a need to denounce those types of actions, then it says that “we are really sick as a people”.

No need for suspension

Meanwhile, the social activist was keen to note that although she stands by most of the recommendations in the COI report, she does not support the suspension of the territory’s constitution in any way, shape or form.

She said examining the report as a Virgin Islander, leaves one disheartened.

“A lot of things in there we knew as a people, we just didn’t have the hard facts. Some of it is, we knew now [and] some of it we’re surprised. However, I still don’t see a case being set for the suspension of our constitution,” she added.

Rosan argued that the governor holds a lot of reserved powers in the territory and said a lot of the changes and reforms necessary to move the BVI forward do not require a suspension of the constitution.

“The governor is already in charge of the civil service, the governor can conduct audits,“ she added.

I don’t think you’ll be voting for anyone anytime soon! If the recommendations in the COI are followed, the constitution will be partly suspended and that means no elections for the duration.

But the fact that you and others appear to support what has been a decades-long period of blatant government corruption involving both major parties pretty much seals the deal as far as UK direct rule is concerned.

Instead, what should be happening is everyone should be rallying behind the Governor to assist in whatever way they can to clean the place up, install new systems, new policies, enact necessary laws and ensure they are adhered to in order to and give the territory back to the good and decent people of the BVI quickly under a reliable, honourable, honest, and orderly system of self-rule.

This will not be the same stage as it was for TCI. Things will mostly stay as it is for now, but the UK/Governor will be in control from behind the scenes.

You have already seen what to expect. Would you have imagined the esteemed speaker meekly resigning without his usual belligerent nonsense? Apparently Scene#1 was the take down of his boss last week.

Mr. CSC or Mrs. PL next? Perhaps to set an example? Stay tuned.

    Rosan,

I totally understand the point you are trying to bring across. You, and the entire territory have the right to denounce what has transpired. The fact of the matter is the territory is made up of WE THE PEOPLE and not only YOU THE PERSON.

We have seen the affidavit with the alleged crime. We have not heard from the Premier of the VI. What the VIP did was the right thing to do as any other political team. They acted accordingly to have him remove as leader of the party with the expectation of his resignation but you MUST NOT cast judgement before judicial review process.

Have you ever been held up by the FEDs before? Do you know they are good when it comes to creating story lines? The sting was basically an entrapment. You lure the culprit into your trap by feeding them with what they want and then you put the lock on them. That is their side of the story. You should not take it as the gospel truth but it does prove the point that the Premier is corruptible even though it was all an entrapment. THE FEDS ARE CORRUPT ALSO!!!

I’m sure you can agree with me of the saying “If you live in a glass house, don’t throw stones.” Peter Tosh. Well you are not perfect neither and we know that because you post your life on FaceBook. However, your point is valid and you’ve made it loud and clear. I respect your decision not to protest but let the people of the VI decide his political faith.

DON’T BLAME EACH POLITICIAN ON HIS TEAM OR ANY OTHER TEAM FOR HIS MISHAPS. YOU WORK TOGETHER FOR NATION BUILDING. YOUR INDIVIDUAL STANCE IS A DISTRACTION CONTRIBUTES MORE TO NATION DESTRUCTION AND NOT NATION BUILDING. KUDDOS TO YOU FOR STANDING UP BUT WE HAVE TO LIFT UP THIS NATION AGAINST THOSE BIGGER THAN YOU AND WE CAN NOT DO IT BY PLAYING THE BLAMING GAME. STOP POINTING FINGERS TO OTHERS AND STAND FOR THE NATION.

You want to run for election to take care of this country but you chose not to march and chose not to stand for the BVI because nobody listened to you? So what would you do to us if you become a elected official? You to selfish and even on the radio show you constantly talk over people because you must be heard. If you moving so now I can’t imagine you with a little power.

A lot of us out here are with her. She stands for something and is not fakey. She has been fighting before many started so don’t come with this lame post. Her fight is all our fight. I didn’t go either between some of the self interest crooks and I too don’t want direct rule.

she is a waste of time. she just wants to be relevant. She and Pope are in the same basket. Both graduated from the same university in an unknown year.
