Cline calls for answers after $2.5M investment loss

Bishop John Cline has called for answers over the government’s failed $2.5 million investment in Delta Capital, arguing that Premier and Minister of Finance Dr Natalio Wheatley must ultimately account for the handling of the public funds.
Cline, speaking in a public broadcast this week, questioned how the investment could have been made without the knowledge of senior Ministry of Finance officials and rejected the Premier’s explanation that he was unaware of the transaction at the time.
“We need answers. ‘I don’t know’ is not an answer that we are comfortable with and willing to accept,” Cline stated.
Premier Wheatley disclosed last month that the $2.5 million investment with the Jamaican company was made without the required approval of the Minister of Finance or Financial Secretary. He said the matter was being investigated by the Financial Investigation Agency and acknowledged that the required procedures had not been followed.
The disclosure followed continuing scrutiny of a separate $5 million government deposit in the now-defunct Bank of Asia. Dr Wheatley previously said former Accountant General Arnold Ainsley authorised that deposit without the approvals required under the legislation. Ainsley was also blamed for the Delta Capital investment.
Cline said the two transactions, totalling $7.5 million, required greater accountability from those responsible for managing the territory’s finances.
“Honourable Premier, the buck stops with you. So we do not accept your answer,” Cline stated.
He also called for Ainsley to return to the territory to answer questions about the Delta Capital transaction or for the Financial Secretary to publicly explain what he knew about it.
“So, what we need to do is see if we can’t get Mr Ainsley back here to answer for himself. Answer for this money. Who gave the authority to invest this money, who signed off on it?” Cline asked.
Cline argued that the $7.5 million tied up in the two investments could have been directed towards pressing needs, including water infrastructure and other public services. He also questioned why no one had been held accountable while investigations continued.
The Premier has said the government has since introduced an investment policy to strengthen oversight, with Cabinet approving an investment strategy governing the handling of public funds.
Cline maintained that the public deserved a fuller explanation. “Something is wrong and we need answers,” Cline stated.
“We do not believe you. Fix it and give us some answers,” he added.

Next …. Why doesn’t he call for his nephew CSC to pay back the government for the contracts he got paid for and did no work. That is my problem with some of these people. They have selective outrage. Deal with your pastor nephew first. Tell him to return tax payers money.

Great question. These agencies don’t seem to function in my opinion. Just collect huge salaries.

Why is he still the Premier and being allowed to get away with this foolishness? Is it because he a so call indigenous? Well then pretend it was Myron who was the culprit, how would you all get on with him? Apply that same energy.
But it was John cline that jump in top of Myron along with other indigenous entitlement elites like Marlon Ronnie and Claude and VIP natalio Wheatley saying bank of Asia $5.5 million dollars don’t need no investigation, and how natalio could do his personal inhouse investigation and don’t take it any further to the governor.
Now they need attention from this $2.5 million to the Jamaican company.
All natalio got to do is threaten Marlon trip to UK as a constitution team group going to the UK.
All true, and there is clearly a self-serving political angle to this as elections approach. But at some point this mess all gets too big and bizarre for people in higher places to ignore. We may well have reached that point.
