Clueless people making decisions for local tourism — Flax-Brutus

“We have people making decisions for tourism who have no idea.” — Sharon Flax-Brutus

Interim Executive Director of the BVI Yachting, Hotel & Tourism Association (BVIYHTA) Sharon Flax-Brutus has suggested that clueless persons are making decisions at the helm of the territory’s tourism industry.

Flax-Brutus appeared on the Talking Points show earlier this week and said the BVIYHTA is working on key takeaways, and summarising conclusions of a recent symposium that it hosted. She shared that once this is done, it will be presented to the government where it is hoped that they will read and make implementations as needed.

But Flax-Brutus said she didn’t simply want a meeting with the Cabinet, but one with the entire House of Assembly, which is comprised of all elected officials in the territory.

“If we don’t have that constructive dialogue, and they are not open-minded enough to listen, then our industry and our BVI we will always be challenged.

“It’s not a perfect world, and like I said, we don’t expect them to pass everything we say, but we have people making decisions for tourism who have no idea and I’m not saying that to make anybody feel bad, because that’s just how it is,” Flax-Brutus said.

She urged the government, if it remains hell-bent on continuing on its current trajectory, to at least surround itself with people who have real knowledge of the local tourism sector.

Flax-Brutus said she did not want either the government or the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB) to come away with the impression that the BVIYHTA is the enemy. Instead, she called for a synergistic relationship and suggested that she wanted the entity to play more of a supporting role.

“We’re all about integration. We’re all about solutions. Yes, we have challenges and we can talk about what doesn’t work from today, tomorrow, but it’s about passing on those solutions,” Flax-Brutus said.

Again, if it is not beneficial to them including her it remains clueless. Her past boss is no where to be found but here she is airing off as if it is not HER in position, those that comes after are “CLUELESS.”

Madam, it is not that those making the decisions are clueless like you’ve said. It is the country has a new generation of leaders that has choosen to don’t go down the path that YOU want them to take.

They are being innovative in their own right with their strategies for marketing that creates inclusion of the youthful culture and heritage of the country.

Enough of more of the same where only a selected few benefits from.

Our product speaks for itself and the Tourist will always come so don’t get mad because you are NOT at the helm. Make room for the new generation and accept it or drink water and mind your business.

You don’t accuse people of having no clue on a public forum and then say that you don’t expect them not to treat you as an enemy. We all know that’s exactly what’s going to happen. In any event, I can’t say that there has been any significant changes to the Tourist Board since she left.

The BVIYHTA was set up to provide employment for this lady – who appears to know more about finding employment for herself than she does about tourism. Isn’t she the clueless one.

As far as I can tell this lady represents no one but herself.

And I have no idea what she claims she has achieved in the tourism business.

no wonder we lose so much business to USVI.

Inept leaders making poor decisions. We tack on fees, taxes, permits, and excessive monies to tourists. They are saying why go to BVI when I can go to USVI for less and enjoy more?

Even day trips are $200 for someone to get a $14 painkiller. Day trips advertise in USVI for more for your dollar. We say come but bring your wallet.

    Nice

BVI attraction for tourism is plunging. All the other holiday destinations have surpassed the BVI in the last 10 years thanks to incompetent BVI persons poor decisions in all levels of the BVI economy.

This entity (BVI Yachting and Hotel Association ) was engineered primarily to upstage and kill the BVI Tourist Board by former members… They are a condescending set of people who believes once they are not allowed to dictate the direction of the BVI then the BVI cannot move forward. They are GATEKEEPERS.

Natalio Wheatley and the VIP was suppose to be defeated on election night and subjected to victimization on a hellish level but Lorna saved them out of her own self interest! The focus brought on by the COI meant that a new government could not simply disband the BoDs so they conspired and created a new entity sanctioned by Smith at BVICCHA.

As much as they criticize Andrew Fahie they are all cut from the same criminal cloth and the reason why the youth NOT hand picked by them destined to fail

  11. Clueless says:

Why they are clueless because competence is not the watch work nor the key to put people in working positions in this country . The keys to working positions are:
    A) Your origin of birth
    B) Your social networking- friends of who?
    C) Who is going to benifit by having the position
    D) Personal preference in terms of association ( it is your own )
    Last in line evaluation
    A) Your educational experience
    B) Your qualifications
They take a back seat to
    Who you fau

  12. TurtleDove says:

LOL….You call people clueless and ask for synerg. Not very smart in my book……You are in a position where you can make a difference and your choice word is cluless to the people you have to work with.

I agree with her assertion that the folks in charge of our tourism product are clueless. And I will say, she seems to really love her home ‘VG’, but I believe she really misses the power and spending authority she wielded when she sat in the Director’s seat more than anything else. An audit should have been done after she left the post and probably should still be done. Ms. Sonia Webster is the only one working for her pay, kudos to her.

That applies to a lot of positions here not just Tourism.

  15. Desiree says:

Tourism is a joke when the airport has been closed for 3 days recently. American Airlines want to increase flights to Tortola but they wont if they cannot land the planes!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Turtle dove says:

It seems you are clueless to the in and out of government. I am stating how the mechanism of government works in a great number of positions. Not attacking the individual who made the statement but the principle of the inner workings of her statement . Check out the boards a classic example :
Head of the BVI Hospital is not a doctor has no experience about what running a hospital means – But is head of the board . Even though a few of the members might be in the healthcare profession what significant contribution can he make . Yes he make know some little thing enough to hold down the post but a doctor of experience or even aretired person in the field would be more competent .

This is the foolishness that is going on on my country so yes some members are cluess

  17. Agree 100% says:

Not tourism alone, Security, Safety. Blame politicians. Everything has become so political, everything is failing..

  18. Weak Governor.. says:

Ports and Pier Park need management changes…Time for new thinking. New approach..We not getting enough from what we offer..We can do better..This Governor is so soft or he is deliberately wants to see BV Islanders sink the BVI while be looks on and laugh..

  19. The man says:

The airport closing so often mean we loosing business, people have their plan set now,not to hear the airport closed for you to sleep on the bench, bvi think they are powerful and wealthy yet Ms Smith running to guyana now.

  20. climb up the baths says:

do the boating tourist really have to climb up to pay a fee to use the baths? it seems like there could be a ticket booth at the bottom;)everyone would send their cv that would be the dream job! and get the money from people who maybe dont pay??

  21. Well saw says:

She who hired 2 consultants when she was the Director, and paid them big money to do her job. Please sit down. Build the desk you sitting at now and stop being bitter. Yes bitter! I said it!

  22. Shut up says:

This woman is so entitled. The BVI Tourist Board don’t belong to you. When you was the Director everything happened in VG. Let the other islands get something, Tortola, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.

  23. You stupid says:

She fully well know what the role of Tourist Board is (Market snd Promote) but can’t let people go their job. Call the ministry, hold them an accountable. Who fooling whom!

  24. Cove says:

Her family business should be the most booked out hotel in the BVI with how much she “knows” about Tourism right?

  25. Haha says:

LOL! You would think so right, since she’s such an expert. Who she really helping? Herself? What ah thing

  26. Ken says:

As an American who visits BVI’s once a year, the BVI’s offer a better option for sailing and boating than the USVI’s. For us, the biggest item that can be improved are quicker customs and immigration lines. We take the ferry from St. Thomas, and it is a pain. If the Beef Island airport can function well and offer more direct flights to the States, even better.
