COMMENTARY: Policy change is the simple answer to the migration conundrum
By Dickson Igwe, Contributor
In certain countries, the path to citizenship for migrants is blocked and for good reason: to protect the native population. Instead, residency and work permits allow migrants entry to work and play.
It is time the Virgin Islands adopts this policy.
Citizenship is a sacred privilege. Giving that privilege away ‘’willy-nilly’’ is sheer stupidity.
There is no reason why an alien cannot reside for life in the Virgin Islands and die on the islands, on a resident permit.
Residents who have applied for citizenship up to this day need not be fearful. There will come a period when a cutoff point is required.
What that means is that land rights and specific social and political privileges that citizenship confers become the reserve of ancestral and locally born natives only.
That would solve this concern in a heartbeat.
The only way a migrant without ancestral links becomes a citizen is through a special sitting of the House of Assembly and cabinet. Alternatively, marriage and adoption.
The human rights belief that all people have a right to migrate where they want and become full nationals is truly a fairy tale.

Did this man get his status via marriage I wonder?
So sick of seeing this egomaniac interested only in getting all dressed-up just to get him foto in ah the paper them always something that’s obvious to say
Sickening
Much less inflammatory than in past weeks .I suspect he ran into Hon. Myron or Mark Vanterpool . Seems like the kinda of chap that capitulates when encountering any powerful person hahaha
You are talking garbage. Im a Vincy, the nonsence im seeing here, cant happen in SVG.
Strange that this is what triggers you
Oppose a strict migration policy for the BVI and we will wake up like in the USVI as second class citizens – it is coming – soon those flooding in will control our economy and way of life just wait and see
Thank you for your contributions. Years ago I heard a kind gentleman from Guyana said the same thing. This was in 2012, then he further stated that the BVI needs a rotation plan of every 7 yrs, then you reapply. When NDP was in this was one of the options they were looking at… but did not do anything. Myron shows less concern about these pressing issues that the BVI is facing. He should not lead these beautiful islands.Wake up!!!! BVI your legacy has to carryon..just like any of the other Caribbean Islands.
Migration into the Virgin Islands as it stands today is simply unsustainable – and a specific group appears to be flooding into the country – give it 5 years and we will all be very concerned
I do not agree with all your POVs but I agree with this one. The Immigration issue in the BVI is significant and very concerning. We, the people, do not even know what the policies are. No one in authority seems to see the issues and putting forward any logical solutions to the problem. It needs addressing NOW and if those in power cannot do it, they should step aside. VIP must GO!
This looks like one of his ignorant Facebook posts. The musings of a dim witted bigot is what passes for commentary on this site.
Isn’t the BVIs work force 60% immigrant including the police force. Man trying to change stuff out of thin air…
Is on the loose , watch out , looks looks he taking over this site with racist bloggings / using different names just as he does on his unpopular racist yello site / we don’t need evil people like you in the third district, we dint need your cheap handouts, give them to the vagrans on the streets in our capital or in the ghetto , they making we look bad • without you adding to it with your dirty narratives . free you mind from all your evil thoughts •••
