Committee established to name national heores

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley announced that Cabinet has already established a committee that is tasked with proposing a list of national heroes for elected leaders to consider.

“These are individuals whose feats are so incredibly noteworthy and special that they deserve recognition on a national and historic basis. Once Cabinet approves the proposed list along with the corresponding protocols, the House of Assembly will have the opportunity to debate a resolution which will officially designate these individuals as national heroes,” Premier Wheatley said in an official address to the territory on October 17 – Heroes and Foreparents Day.

The Premier said once the national heroes are officially named, their stories will become part of the school curriculum and “become part of the national conscience”.

The BVI community has long called for the government to name national heroes as a way to honour and highlight BVIslanders who have contributed to the advancement of the territory.

The territory’s first chief minister, H Lavity Stoutt, as well as activists Noel Lloyd and Theodolph Faulkner are among those that many within the community think should be considered for the national honour.

So some European invader thinks the islands resemble St. Ursula and her Virgins so that is what we have proudly become and she is a national hero. I can understand why they keep saying BVI is not a real place. Sadly many of the so called educated ones living in space. And before you hit the button…I don’t like it either. Go and find your Taino name and identity. Don’t blame a clown for being a clown. Ask yourself why you keep going to the circus. Thanks for the eye opener. Indigenous third generational Virgin Islanders why you keep going to the circus. You lost totally mixed up that is why you can’t take a stand on anything. Heroes? In the BVI? LMFAO. Jump up try and catch some of the shit flying over your head.

    Heros Day,

This sounds like a deflection at the 11th hour, of the sitting Governments inaction on numerous battle fronts. Now to setup a commission, Really?

Why is it that nobody pays any mind to certain people running up and down the street making noise? As soon as they dead or years gone, they remember one thing about them that was extraordinary. So the pretenders try and illuminate themselves for recognising others toils.

Noel was treated like he had the plague when he was alive, no one would even give him the time of day. But when he dead a hero is born. He changed Road Town though his successors have not held to the highest standards of the torch he passed them.

Lavity had vision and commonsense, being the First Chief was not just a name, it was progress and everyone knows this, from roads to bridges to learning.

Theodore was sick and tired of no available Doctors or representation. He achieved something by his anger and frustration.

Somethings people get so fed up with, that then they insist on change.

I am fed up with real life issues that effect me and most every single day.
The roads, the sewage stench, the burning of garbage, the lack of accountability, the guns, the drugs, the crooks, the coverups, the greed, the higher than thou attitude, the denigration, the false prophets, the bad officials.

    In general the BS!

Great heros are out there right now, they could make these changes realised for the betterment of all who are living, if only they take charge for being sick of it all.

We need real live heros today right now, making real changes that can positively effect our daily lives, not when we done dead.

Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way.

  12. @ committee says:

you come strong ? ,however you left out a couple of things ( murder of youths by youths and the disappearance of youths and then there are those who is keeping secrets of vicious crimes committed here because its either their family or friends ,and pointing their fingers elsewhere , ( some don’t have any transparency ,honesty or integrity

  13. No heroes says:

When you need a committee to rustle up names of national heroes you know there really cant be any (or many to be fair)….

Most modern bvi folk probably think of the drug trafficker that brought them joy through horse racing or allowed their son to buy a nice gold chain and ride his speedboat for “fishing”…it wasn’t always this way though.

This place should concentrate on trying to establish some real heroes of the future and not look to the past.

Maybe those future heroes are the ones that rebuild the infrastructure, start new legitimate industries, transform educational standards, improve medical care on island, eradicate corruption and marginalise bad guys not glorify them

  14. VG Proud says:

Why not just call it Foreparents day. Then there is no need for a committee. We can honor our own ancestors in our own way on that day.
