Construction of multi-level admin building for Ports coming

Plans are underway to construct an administration building adjacent to the container port located at Port Purcell on Tortola.

The structure, which will be a disaster-resilient and multi-storey building, is expected to use its second floor to house Customs, Immigration, Port operations as well as shipping agents, while the third floor would be for port management. 

The fourth and fifth floors would be available for lease, the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) has said.

A notice from BVIPA on Tuesday, October 1 further said the entity is seeking ‘qualified companies or firms’ to bid to provide design and engineering services towards the construction of the facility.

The notice said the design of the multi-storey structure should be aesthetically pleasing and blends into the development of the surrounding areas.

It continued: “The building should utilize as much of the lot as legally possible, and the overall design should accommodate perimeter landscaping.”

Structure should be hurricane, flood-proof

Would-be bidders are also being told the structure should be able to withstand 250 miles per hour winds.

“The structure must provide for five floors, constructed of reinforced concrete and CMU/Block Walls. The ground floor should be elevated to avoid flooding,” the BVIPA notice said.

Interested companies are to submit proposals along with certificates of good standing to the Managing Director British Virgin Islands Ports Authority Port Purcell Tortola British Virgin Islands no later than 4:30 p.m. on November 1, 2019. 

In the meantime, a site visit is scheduled for October 18, at 10 a.m.
