Continue singing about me, O’Neal to Calypsonians

Dr Hubert O’Neal

While claiming that he has no hard feelings towards the Calypsonians who publicly criticised him as a poor representative of the Ninth Electoral District, Dr Hubert ‘Bertie’ O’Neal said he wants his critics to continue singing about him.

“I hope they keep singing about me every year. I don’t mind that at all. If I wasn’t doing anything they wouldn’t be singing about me,” O’Neal said in an interview with BVI News Online.

The first-term political representative further stated that he knew he would have been ‘picked on’.

“The Calypsonians will always have their songs and they tend to pick on political figures, so I fully expect that. But I appreciate the talents of the Calypsonians. I was there at the competition that night and I enjoyed all the songs. Although yes sure they sang about me but that’s part of the business. So I expect that.”

Three veteran performers – Sistah Joyce, Queen Shereen, and the 2017 Calypso Monarch King Paido – roasted the Government lawmaker during the Calypso competition held as part of the Easter Festival this month on Virgin Gorda.

That island is part of Dr O’Neal’s constituency.

The Calysonians accused him of – among other things – sleeping on the job.

“All who voted Bertie, now saying they sorry voting for he,” Sistah Joyce sang. “Too late shall be your cry.”

I am doing my job

Asked if he disagreed with the sentiments expressed by his critics, Dr O’Neal stated: “It is not my position to disagree. I can only do what I was elected to do… As far as I am concerned, I am doing my job and I’m continuing to do my job.”

“I can only do what I was elected to do. I made certain promises during election and my aim is to continue to do that. You can judge me after four years,” added Dr O’Neal.

He, in the meantime, stated that he is well on his way to accomplishing the promises he made when he ran for office in 2015.
