COVID-19 has pushed back timeline for medical school’s opening

The medical school which the previous NDP government approved to operate in the British Virgin Islands back in 2018 will now take an even longer time to commence operations.

Responding to queries from BVI News via email, Founder and President of the university, Dr Orien Tulp said the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the initial timeline set out for the opening of the medical facility.

He said: “The pandemic has made our initial timeline a bit longer, but we’ve been utilizing this time to design and plan a very effective, diverse, yet agile school. Our curriculum committee is conducting a careful review of our accreditation application and we are so proud to be including Tortola and the BVI as a part of that.”

Plan to hire locals

Dr Tulp also confirmed that he plans to hire locals once operations begin at its intended location at the James Young Harbour View Marina in East End.

“UHHVI plans to employ a number of local faculty and administrative support staff when fully open in Tortola, corresponding to the number of students enrolled. We are planning to acquire a permanent campus as soon as it is practical and feasible,” he stated.

Accreditation still ongoing

In the meantime, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Carolyn Stoutt-Igwe said the medical facility — the University of Health & Humanities, Virgin Islands (UHHVI) — is also still undergoing its accreditation process and must get accredited before it can commence operations on Tortola.

“Up until two weeks ago, they were finalising the application because the accreditation process is not a simple process, there’s a lot of paperwork that you have to go through,” she explained.

UHHVI is seeking its accreditation from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP).

Kudos for this Mr. Walwyn. I don’t care what anyone else says, you served the country well. Those against will hate because they only see politics and personality. If anyone looks at your two terms objectively none can deny that you worked hard and did an exceptional job. Education has dropped wayyyyyy down since you left.

His work and productivity were clearly superior, yet our dim wit populace, guided only by party politics and personality complexes and undeveloped political astuteness and inexperience, and in their zealously, failed to recognoze the great accomplishments and milestones that were being gained for the territory by the dedication, smarts, love for territory and committment by that great disciplined mind of Mr. Walwyn.

There is no reason to wish, hope, pretend, fantasize, believe, imagine, and wonder about what could have been. As, the electorate cared nothing about the country, but only about its political interest and a political win.

The BVI political mentality and acumen are equivalent to if not less than to chattel enslavement minds of history.

The BVI will never develop a majestic classical legacy, because throughout every aspect of our society, many to most great gifts and minds are blindly victimized and discarded for the interest of inferiority, mediocrity of mind and productivity.

They will always be quick to stiffle their own untapped capacity to achieve greatness.

They abhore their responsibility to mental work and to collectively terminate the widespread generational contrived cycle of political and historical amnesia, cultural alienation from the world stage, and mindless parroting, imitating, and endless galloping after self engrandizement and self hate.

Meanwhile, they are unknowingly acquiescing to the the wishes and deeds of those who wish to distort and maintain their disunity, aims and victory of their/our destiny.

We have overcome too much and come too far to remain so foolish, blind, deaf and dumb. The whole world’s library is open to us now. We should no longer remain in such perpetual ignorance.

Myron was a good leader for the BVI but in this place its who does lie the most does get through. How I saw how they got together to get him out it burn my heart. Jealousy and wickedness. Now the country could have done well with someone like him at this time. I miss Hon. walwyn.

  3. not accredited says:

When applying to a medical school in the Caribbean one of the first things you should check is that it’s accredited, otherwise you are spending close to $100,000 and 4 years of your life that you won’t get back and won’t be able to practice anywhere. Please check with the accreditation sites before considering this school for your studies. I have attached one of these sites here:https://www.caam-hp.org/programs

I don’t even listen to House of assembly anymore. Very often you hear the things coming out of some of the mouths and you feel embarrassed for them and for the country. The voice and intelligence of Hon. Walwyn is missing. It truly is.

Walwyn got a medical school to come in without spending a dime. The premier spent 500,000 on a study and produced nothing. Can you imagine that?
