D2 residents urged to stop littering

Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull has urged his constituents to refrain from littering their communities, saying the authorities need to do more law enforcement to stop the perpetrators.

Speaking in the House of Assembly on September 19, Turnbull said littering is a problem in communities including Brewers Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Jost Van Dyke and Meyers.

“We have legislation in place, at one point there were litter wardens and a fine for $500 but people continue to dump their trash all over the place. This kind of thing has to stop,” Turnbull stated.

He added that residents have become comfortable with dumping broken household appliances as well as construction wastes on empty plots earmarked for future projects.

“I have some areas in the Second District where the Adina Donovan Home was supposed to be built. I cleaned up that area three times! And people are getting to truck out dirt and other materials and dump it on that site – and they’re getting paid. And when it’s not the truck drivers, you have those who dump washers, dryers, stoves and beds. We have to do better,” Turnbull bemoaned before adding that residents have been dumping on a site set aside for a basketball court in the vicinity of Diamond Estate.

Turnbull also called out those who dump garbage along roadways and on lands belonging to others.

“This kind of thing has to stop, but if we don’t have the law enforcement, then you’re going to hear that we (government) have a war on illegal dumping. This is our country and we have to take more pride in it,” Turnbull added.

Waste management has been a longstanding problem in many communities across the territory. Many residents who improperly dispose of their waste or resort to burning say they only resort to those measures to avoid a pile-up on waste in their homes.

Turnbull isn’t the only leader to bemoan poor garbage disposal practices in his district. Recently, D6 representative Myron Walwyn said sections of his community were left littered because residents had nowhere to store garbage amidst infrequent collection.

It still amazes me that a third term representative seem to only complain but never offer or suggest comprehensive solutions to the very issues they complain on. Yes our district has a serious littering issue, but complaining without any proposed solution does what exactly to fix the problem?

Here’s a few ideas the representative should consider proposing to the house rather than just complaining in the house:

    1. Designated household bulk waste collection area in district: Reality is it is not very practical for residents to drive their household bulk waste directly to the incinerator (which shouldn’t be openly accessible by everyone). Instead locate an area out of general public view in the district, fence it to control spillage, residents in the district can then drive to reasonable location within the district to discard bulk items. Coordinate with waste management for weekly or bi weekly collection of the bulk waste using their heavy equipment machinery and have them then transport the bulk waste to Pockwood pond (this would decrease or eradicate road side dumbing).

    2. Propose the implementation a pernament initiative where by residents without access to trucks can contact Waste Management to collect specified type of bulk waste (washer, fridge stove, and other bulk house hold items) from the exterior of their homes and transport them to pockwood pond for a reasonable fee (this also helps to increase revenue for the department)

    3. In relation to Comstruction waste, Encourage area residents to report illegal dumping on public grounds and pass amendment legislation that in addition to being fined, any trucking operator will have their trade license terminated for illegal waste dumbing. Use strategic crown land locations within the territory for the aurthorized dumbing of dirt and collection of dirt to back fill (spooners hill, west end mount andrew, long swap east end).

My proposals may not be favorable to everyone, maybe some elements are useful, but to simply complain about an issue and offer nothing as a solution makes no sense to be, but seems to have been working well for this third termer

  2. Know who it is...we do says:

This so common. Same people. Same people that will never worry.
If you want to stop – arrest. But I think you find you out of a job next election.

  3. Lodger says:

If you know who they are, why noy name them? You are safe on here.

  4. Reaity Check says:

Part of the problem is “broken window effect”, where vandalism is more likely to a building not in good repair. Our 2nd discrict rep has allowed the district to deteriorate to the point that vandalism is rampant. The roads on the east side of the district haven’t been cut in over two years (even though he was a member of the ruling party), road repairs, even on the important Ridge Road, are in desparate need. In short, it is Mitch’s problem to clean up the district if he wants people to start taking pride in its appearance!!!

  5. 2nd District says:

THE UNCUT BUSHES IN THE SECOND DISTRICT IS WHAT IS LITTER. CAN’T DRIVE IN PEACE.

  7. Mickie Loves Yah says:

Wtf. Place enough bins and proper waste management and then urge ppl not to litter. We have ministers hearing cheeks clapping and thinking they hearing gun fire. And now this

  8. TCP says:

Stop TCP and Skelton trucks from pouring leftover concrete mix on side of roads. This is awful pollution.

  9. Mervyn says:

We belongers are just dirty and nasty. We throw our trash on the street, out the window driving, and leave it on the beach. We must do better to pick up after ourselves and keep this place clean

  10. Come on says:

Every morning I pass out the road I see certain individuals from an area in the district leaving their garbage by the recycling boxes where the bin use to be n these ppl have cars but won’t put their trash in it to carry it by bins up by the school or by Harrigan ppl are nasty I feel for the gorges land below where they throw fridges , beds, n bulk waste on. Why can’t the government put a roll on bin every district so if you have bulk waste you can dump it in tgat

  11. Ding dong says:

There is a need to teach,if possible, human norms related to decency.
Whether it is the obscene behaviour in our streets during our August festivities,,selling their bodies in public, improperly disposing household garbage and other degradation of the BVI and its quality of life, these disinherited least preferred interlopers are in dire need of retraining, in an effort to become as close as possible to acceptable human behaviour and practices. Their survival depends on it. They are truly vile, in addition to their unfamiliarity with demonstration of thanks and gratitude. Strange animals. They don’t even know how to wag their tails.

  12. eyesores says:

What about the half built construction sites open for business looking so bad? There are several in CGB. Making the place look like a dump. Look across from Myett’s and the vendors on the beach. How does gov let these people operate in this way? How do they get a trade license? Eyesores to the tourist and the people who live here. Disgrace. Clean up district 2 Mitch. Stop complaining. Get it done! Even if it means you may have to offend your friends and family. This is your job!

  13. PRC says:

In China they pay [public workers] to keep the place clean and organized.

At the same time they use cameras, social credit scores and other less pleasant “re-education” methods to ensure people don’t do what Mitch says they do.
