D8 Representative concerned over murders in his community

The East End Police Station on Tortola.

Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn has expressed concern over the recent spate of murders in his community.

Penn has called on the government to pay closer attention to the issue of policing in his community, and noted that the lone police station in the area is often closed for extended periods.

He pointed out that the Seventh and Eighth districts make up one of the biggest and most populated communities in the territory and residents who are unaware of the absence of officers at the police station are left with a false sense of security.

Penn said he wants to have proper dialogue with the Commissioner of Police on how the continued absence of police officers has impacted the community, especially the business community in the two districts.

“We’ve had over the last 10 months, six murders in our community… six murders in our community, and to not have police presence is something that’s not sitting well with our constituencies,” Penn said. “It’s something that we need to quickly have a conversation and address with the Commissioner of Police and the Governor if need be.”

After the most recent gun murder two months ago, Governor John Rankin expressed deep concern over the proliferation of illicit drugs and guns in circulation and the challenges faced in effectively managing the territory’s porous borders.

“Overall, this is a safe place. Overall, our crime rate is low. But one death, one murder, is one too many in any circumstance,” Governor Rankin said at the time. “And I’m particularly concerned about the number of guns in the territory because the majority of these murders are carried out through gun violence.”

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, who also shared his concerns over the murders in the territory, expressed confidence at the time about the placement of CCTV cameras around the territory and commented that the police placed them in strategic positions so they can get any information they might need in an investigation.

The police station was once a place of tefuge where you can run for refuge .
That police station was there for umteen years . The population has grown by leaps and bounds . It is time for Natalio to put some much needed money into building a bigger and more modern police station so that police men can have good sleeping headquarters, room to rescue overnight victims better inside and outside security for officers who have to help , alwrt alarm system, great lighting system and police on the beat 24/7

Community policing on the beat and driving at barious schedules

Instead he spend hundreds on a concert . Shame onyiu: Health, Education-and SportS, Safety shood be
The top of the agenda . He does not have a clue. My country is going backwards instead of forward

  9. Thought says:

Rather than lambast the police, why not mention where the real problem resides? Everyone knows who doing the illegal businesses and who the drug lords are. Residents seem happy to live amongst many steaming POS as evidenced by the sewage in the streets. Same crap living in the neighborhood.

  10. Just Do IT! says:

    Here’s an idea:
If you want to talk to the Police Commissioner, why don’t you just do that, instead of talking to the media about wanting to do it?
Why can’t we behave like adults here and just get things done rather than talking about it all the time?
