The staff at the Department of Disaster Mangement (DDM) has been granted financial awards in recognition of their “exceptional performance” following the August 2017 floods and the September 2017 hurricanes.

The DDM team was further recognised for putting in “a significant amount of overtime” after the aforementioned disasters.

  1. Really? says:

What about the others who went beyond their call of duty to assist in hurricane relief. Are they going to be sought out and rewarded too?

    • Nonsense says:

Will they get salary reductions for the years when there were no hurricanes and they were on a go slow?

This is their job. We gotta stop this nonsense of wasting the public money.

You sound so ignorant with that statement. I cant believe you really type that! Hurricanes must be the only thing that impacts the BVI. That is why we are where we are today…the stupidness that you people think, believe and write!!!!!

I could tell you. This is the height of foolishness. Why are they awarded to do what they were supposed to do in the first place.

Why don’t you go get a copy of their job descriptions and see what it says before you type or better yet get a copy of the legislation. Think before you type!

Why don’t you send me a copy of both? And while you are putting the legislation together for me, take the time to read the constitution and document what it says about freedom to express one’s self. In the interim I still maintain my position that this is utter foolishness.

  9. BS says:

OK. Great initiative, but what about other public servants who worked tirelessly 12 and 18 hour days, 7 days a week, with no form of recognition? It goes to show which of the leaders in the different ministries, departments, and statutory bodies really give a rats a%% about their employees.

  10. Concerned Police says:

I am not saying that this department did not go beyond the call of duty and should be rewarded. but what about us the Police Department that went even the extra mile. some of us homes got destroyed as a result of the hurricane and had to go right into duty. couldn’t even get to salvage anything because duty called first. We went for days with little to no sleep to make sure that everyone was accounted for and to assist those in need. Some of us did not even have a dry bed to sleep on but we kept it together and we kept going. But instead of getting rewarded for our hard work and dedication what did we get? a cut in our salary. SMH and then people does wonder sometimes. If there is one thing i know for sure is that the members of the RVIPF went over and beyond the call of duty to make sure that we kept the territories as safe as we could without light at the time. So Where is our reward?

I sympathize with you and all the essential workers. I think there should have been a stipend of some sort across the board for you all. The millions government has wasted could have been there for that purpose. What is for you is for you. Don’t give up. Hang in there.

  15. Shorty says:

Wow… So social workers and other government departments who assisted had to go out walking the streets of the BVI doing rapid assessments immediately after the storm while threatened if we didn’t show up we would be kicked off the payroll. These officers had go out assisting the public with not even a bottle of water and when asked we were told to bring water from home. From home the same home we lost, didn’t have. And up to this day no level of appreciation given from anyone ridiculous.

  16. Anonymous says:

They don’t get any duty allowance. They don’t get any special provisions. There are about 13 of them do the math and deduct taxes. Stop fussing they were there 24/7 no idea what to go back to. Some did not see family for days. They worked hard I saw them I volunteered with them. They deserve it.

    Well deserved!
Sharleen Dabreo is one of the most honest, professional, hardworking public servants the territory has. She is an asset to the Government.
I have worked with her in the past and was always impressed with her commitment to doing the best job possible to keep us safe and prepared…. even when the politicians don’t give her the support she needs.
With this admirable lady leading this department we would be a lot worse off today.

  19. WowWow says:

The survivors who lost everything in IRMA should be granted a reward for surviving such an historic storm by helping them rebuild. Govt want the world of paper work in order to use the tax money to help tax payers rebuild.

Maybe these people should be recognized.

  20. PORTS says:

What happen to the staff at the Ports who went waaaayyyy above and beyond to get material cleared for electricity and everyone to start repairs. I have not seen them being recognized at all. We know how congested and busy the Ports was.

  21. Teacher says:

I hope one day, someone or organization will see it fit to reward teachers just as equal like they did for DDM.
