Defending champion out of Calypso competition

Sistah Joyce

After winning the Calypso competition on Tortola for four consecutive years, Sistah Joyce has decided to steer clear of the competition this year.

The artiste, whose real name is Joycelyn Searles, told BVI News Online she does not wish to state her reason for not entering this time round.

In a post on her Facebook page, however, the Virgin Gorda native said: “Just letting my fans know I will not be competing in the Calypso competition in Road Town this year. See y’all next year once nature permits. Don’t ask no question.”

Sistah Joyce, in the meantime, made it clear that she is not pleased that neither her photograph nor that of any other Calypsonian is on the poster being distributed to help promote the Emancipation Festival. This, however, does not appear to be the reason she has opted not to compete.

The Calypso competition is held annually on Tortola as part of the Emancipation Festival.

Sistah Joyce last competed in the 2017 Easter Festival on Virgin Gorda, but finished third. The winner was Reynold ‘King Paido’ Phillip.
