Details of bloody gun fight revealed in court

Kani Hazel, who is accused of shooting a man during a fight last year, was hauled before the Magistrate’s Court today, February 23.

The 20-year-old accused is charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and unlawful and malicious wounding.

He was not made to plead to the charges, which are considered indictable. That means the case is likely to be transferred to the High Court.

Allegations

Allegations are that the gunshot victim’s mother, Denise Grant, was at her Paraquita Bay residence on June 30 last year when she heard gunshots outside her home about 4am.

When she went to investigate, she allegedly saw her son – Tereim Grant – trying to wrestle a gun away from Hazel.

The son reportedly shouted for his mother to call an ambulance, as he had been shot.

The court heard that the mother ran inside her home and called the police.

Shortly afterwards, Tereim stumbled into his mother’s apartment covered in blood, and with what appeared to be a gun in his grasp.

He then collapsed, the court heard.

It is reported that police visited the scene, where they observed blood and ammunition parts on the ground.

They also saw a collapsed Tereim as well as a gun on the living room floor. The wounded man was taken to hospital.

Further allegations are that police also saw the accused near the location where the shooting occurred. He was also taken to hospital.

The accused, Hazel, reportedly suffered a blunt-force trauma injury to his head and face.

Hazel was arrested on July 26.

During a police interview, the accused reportedly denied being at the Grant’s residence or having an altercation with Grant’s son Tereim.

The court heard that He also denied ever being in possession of the gun in question.

He will return to court on March 17.
