Diamond Pump Station undergoing repairs following motor damage

Works being done to the Diamond Pump Station on Tortola,

The Water & Sewage Department has said works are being conducted to have the Diamond Pump Station back up and running so potable water can be returned to various communities on Tortola.

Director of Water & Sewage Perline Scatliffe-Leonard said the pump station, which services more than nine communities on the mainland, became non-functional after its motor over-heated on March 10.

Scatliffe-Leonard said a decision was subsequently made to fast-track the installation of a new pump that will be equipped with a Variable Frequency Drive-defense mechanism to prevent similar instances from reoccurring.

“This mechanism drives the motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the electric pump. This eliminates the burning of its electrical components and its motor and minimises interruptions to the service,” the Director stated.

Third District Representative plea

This announcement comes a day after Third District Representative Julian Fraser called on government to shed light on why his district had been without water for a few weeks.

“I want to apologise at this particular time for the difficulties that the people in my district is going through because they don’t have any water. Been going on now for about a week and I don’t see any end in sight,” Fraser said at the time.

“I hope the government is listening and will do something about it, make an announcement somehow to let the folks know that relief is on its way,” he added.

Affected communities

The communities which will continue to experience water interruptions during the repairs include Sage Mountain, Cane Garden Bay, Fahie Hill, Great Mountain, Mayaba, Sea Cows Bay, Brewers Bay, Upper McNamara, Meyers and surrounding areas.

Not one soul is answering the question as to when we going to get water back on in the third, town has water at full force every day, take off at nights or something so the we can get water, not having any water for 1 week is considered critical at this time, when they suggesting washing hands regularly, you can even bathe twice a day, this is crazy.
