Digicel giving away $40K worth of cement, residents pouring in

Residents are pouring in at a warehouse in Fish Bay where telecommunications giant Digicel is giving away some $40,000 worth of cement.

A number of pickup trucks and other vehicles were seen Friday afternoon rolling into the parking lot of Digicel’s warehouse to get loaded up with bags of the material, which has become a commodity in high demand since the 2017 hurricanes.

“We have people coming in from work today (August 24) in their work clothes, taking cement, loading it into their vehicles. It’s evident that people are still struggling and still recovering and we are doing our little part in that recovery effort,” Digicel’s CEO Kevin Gordon told BVI News.

“We are promising a better, faster, and more resilient network but persons also need to rebuild their own lives and those infrastructures that they’re going to be living in need to be better and more reliable. So, if we can help in rebuilding the territory, we’ll do that. It’s not just about doing good for the telecoms infrastructure but its also about doing good for the people of the territory,” the CEO said.

Giveaway continues Saturday

The giveaway continues all day on Saturday (August 25) at the Skelton Bay Lot in Fish Bay, Tortola.

Residents are being told they need only bring their vehicles to the location and Digicel will do the heavy lifting.

“We have our own fork lift so … we’ll load it in your vehicle free of cost,” said Gordon, whose company recently completed rebuilding its telecoms infrastructure, which was ravaged during the 2017 disasters.

With thousands of dollars worth of cement to spare after their rebuilding, management at Digicel opted to donate it to persons in need.

But, giveaways such as this are not uncommon for the telecoms company who donated some $100,000 worth of building materials to government back in October.

Digicel has also been supporting the reconstruction of Althlea Scatliffe Primary School, which the company had adopted under the government’s Adopt a School programme.

Whatever ayo do, don’t drop the bag on your foot/toe because it will break it. People who pick up that cement will know what I mean.

To keep it a buck they all aren’t hard, but the common lot of them are spoiled so you have a mixture of good and bad.

From my experience, it was more bad than good but others got more good than bad. We we’re paying for them at the time too, so mark that.

That looks like it went to contractors – who will flog it off. Why not give it to the schools for rebuilding or work with someone like adopt a roof who could have told you who those in need really were. Seriously unimpressed with this as those who need help fixing probably got zero. Digicel, with a little imagination you could have made this better.

The people who need it most likely don’t have any means of collecting it
