DR national arrested for bullet found in luggage

The police post at the TB Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island.

BVI News understands that a 50-year-old man from the Dominican Republic was recently taken into custody after airport security allegedly discovered a live round of ammunition in his luggage at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

According to information reaching our newsroom, the incident occurred last Wednesday when airport police reportedly found a bullet during a routine baggage check of a departing passenger.

Our sources say the man, who lives on a boat moored in the Baugher’s Bay area, was questioned with the assistance of a Spanish interpreter before being transported to the Road Town Police Station for further inquiries.

It’s alleged that an undisclosed amount of cash was also seized by the police while the ammunition was taken for further processing by forensic officers.

A similar incident happened in March this year, where a U.S. national was arrested at the airport after a single round of ammunition was discovered in his luggage. The man reportedly accepted that the ammunition was his, but claimed he didn’t realise it was packed in his luggage.

In April 2022, a 52-year-old man was held at the Beef Island airport when a loaded firearm was discovered in his possession as he attempted to depart. He had allegedly entered the territory several days earlier with the weapon, undetected by customs or immigration.
