His co-accused Hatchett, who pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, was sentenced to four months.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards handed down the sentence recently. The prison term for that offence activated on February 20.

Hatchett’s early guilty plea, his no previous antecedents at the time of the offence, and his corporation with police went in his favour as mitigating factors.

What the court heard happened

Prosecutors said the ring’s owner secured and left his home in Long Bush and headed for work.

Upon his return home later in the day, he realised that his house had been burgled and his ring, among other jewellery, was missing.

The court heard that three gold rings with a total value of $2,250 and a gold hand chain valued at $1,100 had been removed from his residence.

He later launching a personal investigation into the burglary, one of the rings in question was handed over to him by Chamber’s father. The complainant later made a report to the police who launched their own investigation and arrested and charged the two men.

The court heard that Hatchett bought the ring on the street but later sold it to Chambers because he suspected that it was stolen.

Chambers admitted that he bought the ring in question but later gave it to his father to return to the complainant when he learnt that it was stolen goods.

The men were unrepresented.

Hatchett is currently spending an 18-month sentence at the prison for assaulting a man, while his co-accused is on remand for attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger.
