Ebenezer Thomas Primary holds mock HOA sitting

Grade 5 students from Ebenezer Thomas Primary School got a taste of government in a very unique way last Friday, March 8. Led by their teacher, Candia McFarlane, 19 students participated in a mock legislative session at the House of Assembly (HOA) building.

Following the theme of an election victory, each student took on the role of Premier, proposing two changes to the territory’s constitution. These proposals included details on the responsible government branch for implementation and the estimated budget required.

The idea for this special collaboration arose when House Speaker Corine George-Massicote visited the school for a student presentation. Recognising the potential for a richer experience, she invited the students to present their ideas within the actual House chambers.

Mirroring a real HOA session, the event was meticulously planned. Speaker George-Massicote presided over the proceedings, with the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, and Sergeant-at-Arms all playing their usual roles, adding to the authenticity.

The event boasted a distinguished guest list, including Education Minister Sharie de Castro; Opposition Leader, Ronnie Skelton; Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism, Luce Hodge-Smith; and Third District Representative, Julian Fraser.

During the session, Fraser expressed his pride at seeing a school from his district taking on the initiative. Minister de Castro commended the young participants, highlighting the significance of female involvement on International Women’s Day. Both Hodge-Smith and Skelton offered encouraging words before the Opposition Leader made a motion to adjourn the House.

This immersive experience gave students valuable insights into governance, fostering critical thinking and public speaking skills. Teacher Candia McFarlane expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasising the importance of hands-on learning in shaping well-rounded individuals.

The Ebenezer Primary School’s Mock Sitting marks a significant step in the House of Assembly’s commitment to engaging the community and preparing students for active citizenship.
