‘Elders’ need to exit politics

Rosan

Political commentator and media owner Cindy Rosan has suggested that certain “elders” in the local political space should retire and give the territory a chance to advance.

Among the people Rosan named are current long-time elected leaders, as well as those who’ve enjoyed close proximity to politics over the years.

“It’s time for the elders to exit stage left: Ronnie Skelton, Kedrick Pickering, Julian Fraser, Lorna Smith, and I’m going to put John Cline in it too. All of them are from the same pack. Give it a rest, go home and let the BVI breathe,” Rosan said in a Facebook Live session on April 8. “We’re tired of your form of leadership and we’re not going to go anywhere under your leadership.”

Rosan said this group and others like them have outdated political views that are undemocratic. As an example, she cited Bishop John Cline’s position that the newly formed Opposition Alliance ousted Ronnie Skelton because they couldn’t wait their turn.

Rosan said such a view is wrong, as leadership should only be determined based on what the territory needs and what voters choose.

“We need to stop this entitlement. It’s how the country is feeling and it’s what the country wants. A leader will come out based on that. We can’t think that Ronnie needs his turn, then Marlon needs his turn, etc. That’s a strong sense of entitlement and it’s not in the betterment of the country,” Rosan posited to viewers.

When it comes to the kind of political leaders the BVI needs, the public holds mixed views. Some believe seasoned politicians have the wisdom and expertise the territory could benefit from, while others believe the younger generation is poised to take the BVI to the next phase of advancement.

Still, others hold that the territory needs the right blend of senior and junior elected leaders to make the Virgin Islands prosperous.

Cindy must be protected at all cost. Not many are brave enough to take on the old guard. There is a particular commentor who has been around for a long time and you could not get a name out of him even if threathned with death. Cindy is unafraid and calls it as she see it.

Cindy is right. Some of those same ones used to cuss Ralph and say he is old and should go home. And now they are acting worse than Ralph. When the NDP started those guys said they only wanted two terms and that’s it. They were in their 40,s and 50,s at that time. Now they are in their 70’s and still around even though most of them have nothing to offer. Ronnie is 73. Kedrick is desperate to return at 70 years. Lorna Smith is 74. Fraser is 75 years. Time to give it a rest.

.. but take a look at what happens when you give the helm to a young politician.. just look at our premier.. his priorities are all wrong.. you think MW will be any different? I don’t think so. All that will change is that people like you will support his rational behavior because you are eating from his pocket.. that all. So the stealing will continue. The hiring of friends and family will still continue… just this time you will be eating from it so you won’t complain… Cindy stop your one sidedness ! You know exactly why and what you are doing. Lol.
If the premier had given you that money you seek you would have been right on his laps. Roof roof!
For such a young not bad looking woman you have very evil ways.. that makes you very unattractive!

  6. I agree says:

All the mess in the house of assembly is being caused by the elderly. Lorna cause Natalio to be Premier. Fraser gave him an increased majority for his own selfish reasons. Ronnie caused the destruction of NDP and now he is once again being disruptive because he lost the leader of the opposition position. So yes Cindy, them need to go the h**l home.

Well lets be frank. The instability and decay in our government (Infrastructure, Education, Healthcare, you name it) over the past thirty years is caused by power hungry inexperienced young people who can’t wait their turn. They demolished (literally) the foundation of the Country given to them and all they can see is money having a good time and greed without accountability.

  7. ..... says:

Agreed. Frazer/Fraser needs to go home. 3rd district is/been diminishing. no economic progress, no social change, no legislation push forward by him, horse racing crippled in HIS district, and now with him as 2nd in command. there still isn’t any change as if he been a back bencher or an appointed member cabinet. 1Can’t believe he’s silent with the mountains that were installed as “speed bumps” in the 3rd that made the drainage system worse. Go Home Roger!

the UK should just enforce the Order in Council, suspend the BVI Constitution, disband the HOA, reduce the civil servants by redundancy and have the UK Governor govern the BVI from 2025 to 2035.

  9. Agreed big time says:

It is time for the older Politicians to step down from Politics and let the younger ones run the show. The older ones is keeping the Territory stagnant with their ways of thinking and doing things. Fraser for example has district 3 in a mess and looking like an unkept ghetto. Fraser can’t relate or understand the younger generation. It is time for Aaron to take the helm. He can relate to the younger generation/adults in Sea Cows bay. The world has evolved and we need to give the younger ones a chance to evolve and show their true potential rather then stagnant.

    • FYI says:

First he has to defeat Fraser which is impossible at this point

Can you send Aaron anywhere outside the BVI to represent us on the world stage? Think about it! Fraser went to the UK and Australia just recently

“It is time for the older Politicians to step down from Politics and let the younger ones run the show.”
      ————————————————–
Most politicians DO NOT step down voluntarily. Do not expect that. Your remedy is to vote them out of office.

Do not expect that they will quit on their own because you will be very disappointed waiting. They have to be kicked out at the polls.

Many of these people become addicted to the power they believe they have and the perks that goes along with it.

Now, I do not necessarily agree that so called “elders” should exit politics. Who and what defines an “elder”?

That’s too general and simple a criteria to get rid of a politician, and quite frankly discriminatory on its own. Ageism is you will.

In my view, politicians should be judged on their individual records regardless of age and not some simplistic notion that they are too old.

Being older does not mean that individual cannot perform or get things done. Look to that “elder” politician’s track record, and their ability or inability to get things done for their constituents.

I may agree some of those politicians mentioned may need to exit stage left; however, it’s not because of their age.

It’s their track record and performance or lack thereof. If younger politicians want to replace those “elder” ones, they are going to have to throw their hats in the ring and run against them.

Long & short: Vote wisely regardless of a person age. Let their record or lack thereof be your guide.

While I am not 100% in agreement, I think these two Terms of Politics in the Virgin Islands take the Cake as being the Worse. I don’t mind if others don’t agree with me But except for Families and Friends who are benefitting, It is safe to say that this is the worst Finance Minister this Territory has ever had and this is the downfall of these Virgin Islands. There should be a Succession Policy enshrined somewhere so that the Older, Good Politicians can Mentor and Train Suitable Individuals to hold such Important positions when the Older Ones are asked to exit the Stage. So far, the current young Individuals that are holding Positions in Government, If you check their Performance, they are NOT it. There needs to be a Champion Type Group, Not one Person who will say enough is enough and take back these Virgin Islands and set All of Us on the Right Path. Sad to say it, But it is plain to see that this Current Administration is not cutting it for the well Being of this territory. Everyone has the right to his or her opinion But. anyone who is Politically intelligent would understand what am speaking about. The Greed and self-Power of some of our current Politicians is destroying The BVI’s Political Fabric which inturn puts the whole Country in a Disproportionate position. All in All . I would say that most of our Current Politicians do not have the Best interest of our Population at heart although every chance they get. they would Chant the Chorus about Country above Self. That’s a Facade. Lastly, If this current Premier cared so much about the people of these Islands, Why couldn’t He meet the Low Minimum Wage Workers half way But at least do something to give them a Relief? He had No Plan to increase the Minimum Wage. Why is the Consumer Protection Bill still suspended? And the Sick thing is, these same Individuals or Groups will stand before the Masses come Election Time and tell them why they should give them another chance. Most of the people in this Territory, especially the Voters DO NOT understand Politics and are easily used for someone else’s Gain while those who are Politically Savy, use the other Group with Empty Promises. How can the Men and Women in the Hollywood House of Assembly claim they are Better for this territory than the UK Officials when they are No different? It’s like saying: We know we Bad, But stick with Us. HELL NO. All of you all MS need to GO!!!!!

The people will decide, in future elections,WHO,they want to lead, this country!

There’s no need for the listing of birth dates, and it’s ramifications, as a cornerstone of entitlement to positions!

There has never, as to date, a leader, placed in power, because of age!

Power, with all its bells, and whistles, will be gained, as long as those seeking such, confer to the electorate, that they possess commensurate skills, and ability, to lead!

  19. Fairness says:

Cindy made some valid points, as usual. However, I it not right to promote age-discrimination. It’s not the age of the person that makes them wrong or right, but their mindset. Young people as we are seeing now, have made some big political/financial blunders that cost the taxpayers dearly.

In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison at age 72, after serving an unjust sentence for 27 years. He came out and was the chief negotiator for his people for a democratic South Africa. He was that country’s first democratically elected President.

Age is supposed to give people with good minds an advantage. On the other hand, when greed and personal gains and ignorance are the supreme political focus, old and young are the same.
