Elsa develops into a hurricane!

Tropical Storm Elsa has upgraded to a hurricane.

At 11 am on Friday, July 2, Elsa was located about 20 miles west-southwest of Barbados.

It was seen to be moving west-northwest at 29 miles per hour and had maximum sustained winds strength of 75 miles per hour.

Hurricane conditions are expected in hurricane warning areas in the Windward Islands over the next few hours. On the other hand, Tropical Storm conditions are expected in other portions of the Windward and Leeward islands where the BVI is located.

The National Hurricane Centre in the United States said heavy rainfall from Hurricane Elsa will quickly move across the Windward and southern Leeward islands today.

Outer rain bands will impact Puerto Rico late today into Saturday and southern Hispaniola and Jamaica on Saturday into Sunday.

Flooding and mudslides are possible.
