Erickson trial set to begin today
Prosecutors have accused Nyron Erickson of being involved in a drug trafficking ring that hauled in more than $130,000 back in 2018.
Attorneys for the government’s side told the court last week that Erickson’s trial is expected to begin today, August 21 as originally scheduled and is expected to last for just two days.
It was further indicated that as many as seven witnesses may take the stand on behalf of the prosecution, most of whom are US immigration officials.
Erickson was charged with international money laundering conspiracy and aiding and abetting related to bulk cash smuggling.
The 31-year-old, who was initially denied pretrial liberty, was whisked away earlier this year from His Majesty’s Prison at Balsam Ghut under heavy security and transferred to Puerto Rico, but was later moved to St Thomas, USVI.
Allegations
According to court records, Erickson is facing charges for his alleged involvement in a plot to illegally bring US currency obtained from illicit drug activities into the United States.
That alleged conspiracy reportedly occurred between September and October 2018 and prosecutors claim that Erickson and his associates managed to transfer more than $130,000 in suspected drug proceeds from Tortola to the US using the ferry system connecting Tortola and St Thomas.
One incident involves Erickson allegedly placing around $48,000 in US currency in the luggage of a co-defendant, Tyrell Turnbull. The latter was intercepted at the Cyril E King Airport in St Thomas while attempting to transport the money to the US mainland.
Turnbull reportedly admitted that Erickson had provided him with the money, intended for delivery to another co-conspirator in Orlando, Florida. The concealed currency was discovered in a pair of jeans.
Another episode centres on Akil Erickson, who was allegedly found carrying approximately $50,000 in US currency, which prosecutors say had a strong hint of marijuana hidden within the legs of his jeans during his travel from Tortola to St Thomas.
A text message allegedly found on Akil’s cell phone from Nyron Erickson discussed using a portion of the money to purchase marijuana.
Mikiel Robin, another alleged co-conspirator was apprehended attempting to enter the St Thomas airport with roughly $38,000 in US currency concealed in a pair of jeans. Text messages retrieved from Robin’s cell phone revealed conversations involving Akil Erickson and a third individual discussing the movement of US currency from the BVI to the US.
A federal Grand Jury in St Thomas issued an indictment on August 1, 2019, charging Nyron Erickson with conspiracy to knowingly transport funds derived from criminal activity and engage in financial transactions affecting interstate and foreign commerce, along with aiding and abetting the evasion of currency reporting requirements.
