ESHS redevelopment project nearing completion — de Castro

A photo of the Elmore Stoutt High School redevelopment project captured this month.

Education Minister Sharie de Castro has signalled that the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) redevelopment project is drawing to a close but stopped short of giving any new projected opening date.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley previously assured residents repeatedly that the project would have been completed for the start of the new school term last month, but this did not materialise.

After experiencing significant setbacks with the shipment of various items such as windows, doors and paint in the last few weeks, Minister de Castro said the final shipment of paint and some furniture arrived last Sunday. She said finishes to the interior and exterior walls, ceilings and external roof coating are all expected to be completed over the coming weekend.

The Education Minister said her ministry’s focus is now on the completion of the building. “With all of the required windows, doors, lighting, paint, and stains are on island, the contractors are working diligently towards final completion,” de Castro stated.

Furniture and electrical appliances are expected to be delivered to the site after the final finishing work is completed.

“I will continue to share updates to keep everyone fully informed of the progress and any further matters that may arise,” the Education Minister said. “The date of the official opening ceremony will be announced after full completion of the aforementioned.”

According to Minister de Castro, the work of the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA), which spearheaded the project, is highly commendable. She thanked the team for their professionalism in executing the project.

Ahh, yes, the Minister of Education – sorry, I had almost forgot you were part of this ‘Government’!

Was just reading this article and was asking myself the question, what do you actually do, and why are you even there?

Anyway, got to get back to work ………..

Why place slabs of concrete is that position? Our young smart designer minds know anything about natural air flow? We live in rhe tropics, cement absorb heat. What a hell fire area. Than we have rainy season, how are you to move from class to class. Poor designs but then again we are our worst enemy

Looks like the old indoor/outdoor Florida and Puerto Rican concrete public schools from the 60’s. The students and staff got hot during the day and wet when it rained. ‘Natural’ ventilation by windows everywhere except the 2-3 air conditioned offices for the headmaster, teacher lounge and nurse clinic.

Poor design is joke. Looks like a prison if you ask me. Nothing here looks like a learning inspired environment to motivate students and make them want to be on campus. Please do something better with the landscaping and interior.

Seriously who designed this and why oh why was it selected??
We just how much on a crap design and build?? Did none of you go and visit new built for purpose schools?

Its ugly, it will be hot and balconys like that are a MASSIVE risk in a school. It is far too easy to push some one out. Plus you have one staircase for 2 buildings in case of fire.

Such a shame to waste a golden opportunity by putting crap back.

These will be proven to be unfit for purpose very quickly.

Nearly, almost, soon and nothing done. Same woman who ignored the mold report for the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School and let our poor children go back there. She should resign today if Sl** Andy doesn’t have the stones to fire her.

I just wanted to use this name to get the attention of a few. I am happy that the school is making some progress but one thing that bothers me from the road side.Between the RDA and Rodger Smith who we saw doing the finishing touches by the road side. Who is responsible for designing the side walk by the road heading to UP’s? I think the side walk is to small. That side walk cannot hold two people properly and look at all the extra empty wasted space on the inside of the land with dirt. Please whoever do these designs lets do things properly in the 20th centry. Please add some more concrete even if its on the inside of the side walk so that when school is over that there is amply space for the studends to walk. Because it was done so small i witness the students walking on the road. One on the side walk and two on the road. Please fix this.

  12. who to blame says:

I agree with breaking news. also there is no lay-by for the buses to pick up and drop off students.
Maybe when widening the side walk the drop off and pick up can be considered.

AM PRETTY SURE THAT THERE ARE STUDENTS THERE THAT CAN COME UP WITH A BETTER DESIGN THAN THOSE , WITH ALL THE SPACE AVAILABLE / THE YOUTHS ARE INTO THE COMPUTER AGE , SO YOU ARE REALLY INSULTING THEIR INTELLIGENCE AND YOURSELVES .
COMMON SENCE CAN GO A LONG WAY/ BUT OBVIOUSLY IT WASN’T APPLIED HERE . (NO OFFENSE

They promised it by August right? Right on time…

  20. Free says:

Why we don’t design it to be beautiful and inspiring? It look like a soviet office building or a prison somwhere in Nigeria. Fugly. Can you imagine standing on that concrete balcony staring across at an identical fugly concrete balcony? How are our kids meant to feel uplifted by that?

    High School design issues

Did the design address mold accumulation issues…low Sun light and no fresh air=

Did the design address mass casualty incidents/ Security issues

Did the design address emergency escapes (school fights, )

Did the design address sporting activities

How about traffic congestion and noise pollution for the House of Assembly and High Court

  24. @Hello says:

    NO. It did not.

  25. Time Will Tell says:

So everybody wait until the school just about done build to have all these negative comments? Where were you when the proposed drawing were circulated? Where were all the brilliant minds that know soo much about design and construction then?

We don’t like change or anything good. When we got rid of Income Tax, businesses were all going to go out of business. When the recreation grounds were being done, it was waste of Govt money to do it until we held the first track meet.

Ayo just dam sickening now man….
