Fahie’s appeal pushed back after ‘family medical emergency’

Former premier Andrew Fahie has been granted additional time to file his appeal in the United States Court of Appeals after his attorney, Benedict Kuehne, sought an extension due to an unexpected family medical emergency.
In an unopposed motion filed before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, Fahie’s counsel requested a further 14-day extension to submit the initial brief and appendix in the appeal arising from proceedings in the Southern District of Florida.
The court filing states that the initial brief is now due on January 30, with the appendix to follow on February 6.
The request was grounded in what the filing describes as an “unexpected personal event” that required Kuehne to divert attention to urgent family matters. According to the motion, Kuehne’s 98-year-old mother-in-law suffered a fall during the holiday period, breaking her hip and requiring hospitalisation and hip replacement surgery. While the surgery was successful, she continues to recover and undergo physical therapy, the filing states.
“As a result of this unplanned medical activity, undersigned counsel and his spouse have devoted the greater part of the holiday season to assisting as her primary caretakers, along with her aides and other family members, thus limiting counsel’s availability,” the motion states.
According to the filing, the unplanned circumstances created a backlog of pending legal matters, requiring additional time to complete the appellate brief. It also notes that Kuehne faced several significant recent and upcoming court deadlines, including filings with the US Supreme Court and other appellate courts, while continuing to manage obligations in both state and federal proceedings.
Kuehne wrote that preparation of the initial brief requires further consultation with Fahie, who remains incarcerated, and that counsel is unable to complete the required research and writing without the requested extension. The application adds that the request was made in good faith, was not intended to cause delay, and would not prejudice any party.
The motion confirms that Assistant US Attorney Jonathan Colan was consulted and raised no objection to the relief sought, the document states.
Fahie was sentenced in a Miami Court in August 2024 to serve just over 11 years in prison after being convicted on drug and money laundering charges. The former premier maintained his innocence throughout his trial.

Andrew Fahie is within his right to appearl his conviction. He did cause this country significant reputational harm and brought shame to our country.
Nevertheless, I am about to say something that will be hard for many of you to swallow, but here it is.
Not only do I believe Andrew Fahie is entitled to an appeal of his conviction as any other convicted person in the U.S., given what is occuring in the United States with Trump pardoning criminals left and right and emptying the jail houses, that being the case, I will say Andrew Fahie should be freed despite his conviction.
Exhibit A:
Trump pardoned the former President of Honduras juan O Hernández on November 28, 2025 who had been sentenced to 45 years in prison in June 2024 after a U.S. federal jury convicted him of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States and related firearms offenses.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Hernández and his co-conspirators trafficked more than 400 tons of U.S.-bound cocaine through Honduras between 2004 and 2022.
The United cannot have it both ways. Andrew Fahie’s crimes pale in comparison to Hernández, and yet Trump freed him after spending months in jail.
Fair is fair or fair should be fair. How could the U.S. in good faith keep Andrew Fahie behind bars or any other person convicted of similar crimes while releasing this man who was convicted of the worse?
In this world, many of you will understand that life is not fair, and justice is relative and could be conditonal. What’s good for the goose is not always good for the gander.
Depending on who you are in the United States, geopolitical agendas, what constitute a crime rewarding of punishiment is not universal.
It can be arbitrary depending on money, race, sex, politics, and whatever the people doing the pardoning can benefit from in some way.
So, YES, what Andrew Fahie was convicted of was despecable. He was selling our country out for drug proceeds.
Interestingly, he did what many people in this country always accuse others of: Selling out the country. Normally, that accusation is not about drugs. Well, he did that and more.
For that he deserves punishiment both there and here. However, it’s hard to argue at this point that Andrew Fahie should remain in jail for a decade more or 90 years as you wish, when Trump released someone convicted of a similar but worse crime. Not to mention all the January 6 criminals he pardoned.
I would gaurantee his appeal lawyer will cite Hernández’s conviction and release in his appeal or potential request for earlier release. I cannot imagine he would do otherwise.
Bottom line: Criminaility is relative depending on who is making the determination. When one find themselves in these predicament, things get muddy, and the difference between right and wrong gets blurred.
If you are going to survice, you have got to use all the cards available to you. Hernández did and it worked out for him. Andrew Fahie may have to follow in his footsteps. Only problem is he is of the wrong color and broke and has nothing to offer Trump to appease his narcisstic ego.
