Faith & Medicine: Dr Kedrick Pickering’s book launches today

Former Deputy Premier and physician Dr Kedrick Pickering will officially launch his debut book, Walk in Faith & Medicine, at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital lobby this afternoon.

The book offers an intimate exploration of his medical journey intertwined with his faith.

Speaking on the Talking Points show about the inspiration behind the book, Dr Pickering described it as “a collection of experiences” from his medical career, particularly between 1992 and 1999.

During that period, Dr Pickering and former Premier Dr D Orlando Smith were the only surgeons at the then-Peebles Hospital. “To say that it was difficult would be an understatement,” Dr Pickering reflected. “There were times during my own personal and professional life where I can’t explain outcomes other than to say that there was a divine intervention.”

The book delves into pivotal moments, such as operating on his wife during an emergency caesarean section. Recalling the experience, Dr Pickering said, “She asked me if I was going to be alright. Because she’s more worried about me than she is about her son.”

Dr Pickering also highlighted the evolution of healthcare in the Virgin Islands, comparing the rudimentary facilities of the 1980s to the modern resources available today. “When I came back home in 1986, there were six doctors in total at the hospital. We didn’t even have cell phones or pagers. But we worked hard, and faith was always in action,” he said.

The book hopes to inspire readers to reflect on their own faith journeys. “You can’t just have faith and don’t have faith,” Dr Pickering said, quoting Martin Luther King Jr, “Faith is taking the first step when you can’t see the staircase.”

The launch event begins at 4:30 pm and includes a book signing session. Copies of Walk in Faith & Medicine will be available for $20. Dr Pickering, who has already signed over 60 pre-ordered copies, expressed gratitude to his supporters and hopes the book will inspire others. “If it encourages even one person to walk in faith in their personal life, then I am thankful,” he said.

Dr Pickering’s book is available on Amazon for electronic purchase. For those unable to attend the launch, signed hard copies will also be available through local distributors.

Look in the mirror! The vaccine helped far more people than it hurt, which accurate and honest research would verify.

They gave me Astrazenica in VG and Pfizer in Tola. I am lucky to be alive as a result, but half crippled. Someone or entity messed up big time and needs to pay up.
