The Department of Waste Management has reported more females participating in the just-concluded ‘Cash of Work’ cleanup programme than males.

Cash for Work hired persons 18 years or older to assist in cleaning up the four main islands in the BVI. Works associated with the programme involved bush-cutting, debris removal, painting, and cleaning up around communal dumpsters.

The United Nations Development Programme funded the initiative, which the Department of Waste Management said was a success.

“The participants were really appreciative for the opportunity and the added hands helped the department achieve certain tasks that we were unable to because of the added workload since September 6, 2017,” said Waste Management manager, Greg Massicote.

The first phase of the initiative began in February and focused on the sister islands of Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

Phase two of the programme focused on the main island of Tortola and was a month-long cleanup, which began on June 4 and ended on June 29.

A government media release issued this week has described the United Nations Development Programme as a global network, which advocates for change while connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life.

Tortola men were all too busy sitting on a wall to participate.

Today’s Young Men Are Lazy! Many parents have raised these boys/men and they have been spoilt by being catered to. Many moons ago, if you were down and out, you didn’t beg, you worked(by the sweat of your brow).

Kudos to the many women that took up the mantle to not only work but see the pride in cleaning up our little nation.

I must say they did a very good job and this is something that Government should continue. They cleaned the place better than PWD and Solid Waste ever did.
