Firefighters contain apartment building blaze in 14 minutes

A fire that broke out at an apartment building in Sugar Mill Road on Tortola was able to be contained within 14 minutes of firefighters receiving the call about the blaze.

This has resulted in the officers receiving high praises from Fire Chief, Zebalon McLean.

Chief McLean said the headquarters of the Virgin Islands Fire & Rescue Service received a report that a house was at fire 6:25 pm on Monday, June 1.

Following an immediate response, McLean said his firefighters were “able to confine the fire to the bedroom where it started” and brought it under control by 6:39 pm.

It was extinguished shortly thereafter, he stated.

“I am extremely proud of my officers that they were able to avoid displacing tenants and severe loss to the building’s owner. All our fire officers continue to do an amazing job,” McLean said, while further urging residents to be mindful of their surroundings.

There are no known reports of injury as a result of the incident.

It is unclear how the fire started.

Good news. Without a full-time fire department to provide this service the occasional fires we have could cause a lot of damage and misery to our community.
