First phase of ESHS redevelopment completed ahead of schedule

Demolition and site clearance of old foundations at the Elmore Stoutt High School has been completed ahead of the January 7 deadline.

The project was undertaken by Sandwise Limited as they won the $136,079.50 contract to provide the demolition and clearance services.

The works began on December 10 and since then, workers have been working from 8 o’clock in the morning to four in the afternoon to complete the task during the allotted time frame.

While demolition was happening, BVI News noticed workers drilling through the old concrete foundation in the mornings and using an excavator to remove the heavy stones once the drilling stopped in the afternoon.

The debris was loaded into dump trucks and removed from the site.

Over the last few days, the workers levelled the area and poured asphalt on various sections.

The redevelopment of the school campus will be done in a phased approach according to Premier Andrew Fahie. The first phase was the demolition and site clearance which is now completed, and the second phase is the design consultancy phase which is ongoing.

This phase started on December 2 and is expected to be completed on January 14. Trojan Design and Development Limited won the $99,480 contract and is expected to provide the architectural drawings for the three proposed two-storey buildings at the school.

Last month, Premier Fahie said the government has been working hard to repatriate the senior students to the Lower Estate campus as the Clarence Thomas Ltd building in Pasea Estate is not a conducive teaching and learning environment for students, teachers, and administrators.

The government is expected to send out invites for tender applications for the construction of the new school buildings soon. The Premier had promised that senior students are expected to resume schooling in the new buildings at the Lower Estate campus at the beginning of the 2022/2023 academic year.

The new buildings will consist of 10 large classrooms for 25 students each, 25 small classrooms for 18 students each; eight student bathrooms as well as a staff bathroom, a principal’s office, and an administrative office, and a staff lounge.

How much times are they going to design plans for ESHS? Aren’t already two set of plans which exist for this campus?

The “L” shaped building at the high school is 1 part of what should be two “L” shaped buildings in that same area and then the existing older building were to be destroyed.

We are now again designing buildings for the high school. The then government paid good money to an architect for that design which now seems abandoned with no reason given by Government.

We have permanent secretaries, engineers, tender committees, etc all watching this unfold and not one saying, “hey what about that second “L” shaped phase before we move on to the third and fourth phases?”

All these people are a waste of time. Some only look good on paper and in front the camera.

Ahead of schedule???!!! It’s only been 4 years, and it’s only the primary vehicle for education for the job market in the BVI!!

No wonder we have so many skilled, educated foreign workers. There will be more of them at this rate, if we aren’t allowed to turn into Haiti.
