Fishing tournaments require prior approval, department warns

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has warned that fishing tournament organisers and participants in the Virgin Islands must obtain licences before staging or taking part in competitive fishing events.

The department issued the reminder in a press release this week, stating that organisers should secure approval before publicly promoting tournaments.

“Event organisers should obtain a licence before advertising the event as this protects the organiser legally, ensures compliance, and enhances the event’s credibility,” Director of Agriculture Theodore James stated

According to the department, organisers must submit applications at least 90 days before the planned tournament date. Required documents include photo identification, business verification records and the rules governing the competition.

Participants are also required to apply no later than 30 days before the event. The department said all participating vessels must possess a Certificate of Registration issued by the Fisheries Department confirming that the vessel is registered for fishing activities.

If vessels are not already registered, operators may submit registration applications alongside tournament applications. The process requires vessel photographs, details of fishing gear and proof of ownership.

The department also advised that authorised officers may inspect vessels and fishing gear at any time during the process. Organisers will also bear responsibility for compiling and submitting tournament catch records, including catches, no-catches and catch-and-release data from every participating vessel.

“We take pride in our marine resources, which must be managed to maintain what so many enjoy about The Virgin Islands. We aim to ensure that fishing events are conducted legally and applications are processed in a timely manner,” James stated.

The department further warned that licence fees must be paid before certificates are issued and said officers would enforce penalties against persons who fail to comply with regulations or reporting requirements.

Fishing tournaments remain a regular feature of the Virgin Islands’ marine tourism sector, with events often attracting local and overseas participants. Authorities have previously highlighted the importance of fisheries data collection and sustainable marine management as part of wider efforts to protect fish stocks and preserve the territory’s marine environment.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries said persons seeking further information can contact the department directly by telephone or email.
