Flax-Charles corrects pastor for prayer’s lack of gender neutrality
Territorial At-Large Representative, Shereen Flax Charles has rebuked statements from a local pastor who she said was not gender-neutral in his prayer for House of Assembly (HOA) members this week.
“Firstly, I don’t know if it was an error inadvertently, but this morning I could not help [but notice] when the pastor gave his prayer, that he was not gender-neutral and spoke to ask the Lord to help the ‘men’ of this House to do the work that needs to be done for this country,” Flax-Charles said.
The first-term legislator said even though she had the utmost respect for the pastor, she felt it was important to acknowledge the females in the House and those throughout the territory as well.
“The time has come where I don’t think I or any of the women that sit in this Honorable House should come to this House in a mini skirt so that we are able to be recognised or even seen,” she added.
The At-Large Representative suggested that the pastor’s statement may have been an honest error.
Meanwhile, the legislator said she continues to work with business persons and those in the commercial sector in the territory to enact projects which demonstrate their commitment to social good as well as bolstering channels territory-wide for corporate social responsibility.
She further stated: “I concluded 2021 with a series of investments into volunteer and not-for-profit entities which will be reaped in the form of positive impact against social issues like inequality, domestic violence and abuse, women’s empowerment and access to opportunity for young people, particularly those who are inclined towards business.”

The pastor was merely noting that women don’t normally need help to get the job done, but men need all the help God can give them!

In the bible there were women leaders. Deborah, her story can be found in Judges 4 and 5. Miriam, the prophetess and leader. Esther, the queen who risk her own life to save her people. Priscilla, the business woman Acts 18:26.
