Former Premier led everyone else astray — Walwyn

Walwyn

Former Education Minister Myron Walwyn has blamed the faults demonstrated by the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government on the fact that it only had one member with prior experience in governance.

When the VIP succeeded in ousting the Walwyn-led National Democratic Party (NDP) at the 2019 elections, the VIP’s then-Chairman, Andrew Fahie, was the only candidate on the VIP’s electoral slate with any experience as a lawmaker. Fahie, who has since been arrested and charged with drug smuggling, racketeering and money laundering in the United States, is now expected to face trial in July.

But while speaking at a political rally in the Sixth District last evening, April 18, Walwyn suggested that even with his decades of legislative experience, it was Fahie who led the VIP in the wrong direction.

“The last occasion, you had a team that only had one person with any kind of governmental experience, and the one person led astray everybody else. And so we ended up in the problems that we are in now, we cannot afford for that to happen again,“ he urged.

Walwyn argued that it was important to look into the background of persons being elected into government and suggested that his fellow NDP candidates, now being led by Eighth District Representative, Marlon Penn, had much experience in their various fields.

The former lawmaker contended that the territory is on a proverbial precipice and had various constitutional and economic issues to confront, among other things, so electors need to put a government in office that can hit the ground running.

According to Walwyn, the claims of apathy from voters is a clear reflection of the lack of confidence in the territory’s leadership.

“We have got to take that warning seriously and those of us who are lucky enough to get elected, must take that responsibility seriously and restore the hope and confidence of our people,” he stated.

“The last occasion, you had a team that only had one person with any kind of governmental experience”

Madness. Everyone has to begin somewhere but having 10 of 11 members being first timers at such a crucial time was a huge mistake.

Let us not make that mistake again. I am not advocating for a full overhaul, as that’s how we got here in the first place, but we need more experience and wisdom at the helm.

    • Battle Tested and Tried says:

That’s why the only team in the game this time that has been Battle tested, tried and ready is the Green Team. Which other team other than Team VIP has experience on the Clean up and Rebuilding of a country after a Category 5 hurricane? After Not one but 2 hurricanes?. Which other team has the experience of managing and taking a country through a historic pandemic, such as Covid-19 with an economy ready to expand after such a massive toll, taken?. Be careful with your mouth hon Wolwyn. The TBLettsome Airport is named after a man that supposedly didn’t have all that much experience in government. Hon. Lavitee himself wasn’t that much experienced at the helm of government during the Bates Hill/Wickhams Cay Development catastrophy that cost the UK several millions to Repay the developer. Further it was Experienced NDP experts that bought a plane for over 8-milloon counting in Dr. picko many, many trips overseas learning by trial and error about developing/managing an airport. Meanwhile a none experienced VIP government is accomplishing the same goal of getting direct flights between the US and Beef Island, at very little cost,if any. It was also an was an experienced Communication/Works Minister in charge of the Pier Park development that cost tax payers over 40-Millions in over run. It was an experience NDP minister responsible for over 40 million over run at Dr.D.Olando Hospital. It was also an NDP Health minister that is costing tax payers upwards of 40 million annually for an improperly thought out NHI insurance. It was also an NDL Education minister under whose hands the Elmo Stoutt High School Wall ran a cost of over a million dollars with some 70 contractors. It was an experienced NDL government at the helm when some 80 unqualified expats acquired Residency /Belongership. Can I take a Rest Now?

I ain want to hear nuttin from this man who has been arrested and charged with corruption for the high school wall. For God in Heavens sake his case is before the court right now! How can he be allowed to run for office. Completely unacceptable. Marlon you asked him to run in District 6 but it was a mistake. Why would anyone vote for a man who could be up Bhalsum Ghut any day now. NDP is stained by Myron’s corruption. Set a hypocrites.

With all the experience the NDP had, they spent over 7 million on a plane that didn’t take off and 1 Million on a wall, so I fail to really understand what he is trying to say here.

Everyone has to start somewhere; you were once new to politics and have also made missteps, so say one say two.

You realize that the plane and the wall is just 8 million worth of mistakes?… it might sound like a lot but VIP come and kill that same money on ONE UK lawyer that barely do anything…. Plus all their other multi-million dollar ‘Mistakes’ it cant be compared how much money the VIP has wasted in ‘Mistakes’

  14. Youth man: Let's be real says:

Next he will blame Fahie for:

    1) Leaving our teachers & children of ESHS in poor health condition facilities and tents years after Irma so a ridiculous rent of more than $60k a month be paid to party supporter.
    2) Million dollar questionable cost and procedure wall while the school buildings were in need of serious repairs.
    3) $8million plane heist and no plane or flights up to now but the money has flown away.
    4) $100million over run pier Park project where the money sailed away in the sea although all didn’t went in the project it looks good.
    5) About eighty rich upper class status quo people who lived in the BVI less than 5yrs getting residency and belongers in 2019 right before the last elections and voted while leaving out the Carribean people who were living in BVI for many many years. No audit or COI or otherwise on this.
    6) Multimillion dollar spent to purchase an incinerator which never worked properly up to now and came without all the parts which were since paid for again and again and still never reach to BVI while the people suffer and get sick and died from the open burning the new incinerator was supposed to take care of.
    7) An NHI scheme to make friends and family rich in a legal but unethical way while the people get shaft with Healthcare and how much care they can get.
    8) Failure to fix the L-shape building at ESHS and failure to build new facilities for our children and teachers to move out of the moldy building and tents in pasea.
    9) Failure to build new primary school in JVD but left our teachers and children in a health hazard long after Irma.
    10) Taking the East End/Long Look sewage money and illegally transfer it to the Pier project and leaving the people in the east swimming and walking in filt.
    11) Taking $16 million from Social Security to fix the public roads. The roads are worse than ever and the money vanished and has never been properly accounted for to match up to what it was taken from SSB to do.
    12) Leaving the people to suffer after Irma and all most of the aid left to spoil on the festival ground but give out business loans to friends and families only through trade where 95% who received the loans did not pay back a cent and the taxpayers had to do so while covering this up.
    Let’s stop there for now.

Walwyn needs to stop trying to fool the people in his efforts to get votes and look in the mirror for who to rightfully blame.

  15. OMG - Again and Again - No Wonder says:

What is this highly educated and experienced law Maker keeping Noice about again?

When he got in gov did he have any experience? No wonder he got involved and made that huge mistake with the high school wall.

If they, the VIP team did not get in in 2019, where and how would those newbies gain any kind of experience? Well thank God they got in there in spite of the only man with experience according to you, they, the newbies were able to score big points even when the leader got incapacitated, they were able to score huge points even after hurricanes Irma and Maria, they were able to score even bigger points during the Covid pandemic.

BVI, if we really know what is good for us, we would rally around the now experienced newbies and give them an opportunity to really continue to prove themselves. I say a BIG Welldone to those newbies who have now gained some experience. This 2023 election, will be a time for them to shine or continue to shine even brighter.

All these experienced rejects, that we rejected in 2019, all they talking about is Andrew and VIP, they are saying nothing about their goals and intensions for BVI if BVI is so badly off. This country continued success does not depend on any man, but the Lord God Almighty. So all these politricians might as well forget their evil devices and let VIP roll on.. Yes, VIP ALL THE WAY, BAM, BAM, BAM. Another 4 years of VIP reign!!!! Halleluia!!!

NDP was voted out overwhelmingly because of the NDP’s misdeeds. If NDP had done better, VIP would not have won the election. Mr Walwyn, you are making a huge mistake again buy focusing your campaign on VIP. Why cant you focus your campaign on the reasons why NDP was voted out. A lot of the infractions committed established by COI occured during NPD’s tenure

  19. TRUST says:

None of these folks currently serving or who previously served understand what they are dealing with or what kind of people they are appealing to in this election. From the youngest to the oldest, locals, belongers, white and black in many instances feel that NO ONE who previously served should be re-elected, they are all tainted in one way or another. Most of us feel that you can only tell us that you were physically afraid of Fahie and you were afraid you be the next asasination in support of why you signed off on things you campaigned against. When you signed off on the extra insurance for yourselves, you made yourselves better than us. We have to pay the taxes that pay for your private extra insurance and struggle with NHI and our own living expenses. When you signed off on your inflated, outrageous retirement package, once again you were better than us especially after raiding the Social Security fund on which many of us depend. Explain how all of you, experienced or not, could not do addition and subtraction to know like the rest of us with all the degrees that your packages were not sustainable, that this country would only pay you and would never build another road, school, maintain the hospital or move forward with health care or anything else that we the people would need to live a decent quality of life. Not an extravagant life like you planned for yourselves, but reasonable and decent. So you can’t blame us when we read your posters and scoff at things like “Change Agent” because you changed nothing except the respect we had for you and the trust we placed in you. All of you need to apologise to the people of this country and then go the hell away and find someplace else to rape and pillage. Like the AG said, once again you threw all of us, the people, under one bus after a next. So we will swing for the fences and elect the uninitiated, the untried, because this is one time when we think its fair to say things cannot get worse.

  20. Rubber Duck says:

No politicians or their relatives and cronies gained money from the plane. Crooked lawyers and con men did.

Walwyns cronies and potential voters got money from the wall and thats why the NDP should have booted Walwyn. It is to their shame they let him remain notwithstanding innocent until proven guilty

The Vipers dished out $50 million of our money to themselves and their cronies.

    No real comparison.
