Former top cop blasted for staying in BVI

Commentator Julian Gordon has accused an unnamed former police commissioner of remaining in the territory past his expiry date.

Gordon, while appearing on the Hot Seat talk show, suggested that there was a slew of retired United Kingdom (UK) police officers working in the territory that cost taxpayers upwards of $7 million.

The talk show host questioned why the force could not recruit police chiefs locally and asked why the level of training was reduced from what took place in earlier years.

According to Gordon, the former Commissioner bought property in the territory that overlooks a popular beach on Tortola for hundreds of thousands of dollars and also committed to spending another hundred thousand on a pool for the property.

“He’s still in the Virgin Islands, his contract is finished. Why are we entertaining that?” Gordon questioned. “Are we going to do the same thing when the next chief of police retires? Is that the object?”

Gordon also questioned whether this was an emerging pattern for police chiefs in the territory.

The talk show host also questioned why the former top cop should be appointed to local statutory boards such as the BVI Ports Authority Board.

Gordon’s co-host, Daniel Davies disagreed and suggested that the former top cop offered some amount of value to the board given his background in security.

  1. The Commissioner says:

Respectfully Mr Gordon we are a democratic country and the retired Comissioner is free to retire in the BVI or anywhere else for that matter. In addition provided his money is not from ill gotten gains he is also free to purchase property in the Territory subject to obtaining the relevant licenses. If memory serves me correctly a certain non local Magistrate was also allowed to retire here and has established a law practice. Lets stop with the hypocrisy and race baiting.

Agree with your every word. Some people just like to live in the swamp of confusion, divisions, and hate.

IMO, this one wakes up every day doing these things. It’s sad really, because they seem to forgot that this life is very short, and they are more closer to the end than many.

IMO, they should focus more on being a better person and not a bitter one. Try to do some good before they leave this earth. It may be a bit late but never too late to change.

As for the Commissioner, I personally don’t see his race or where he came from. I know this much, I like him.

I’m trying to understand his point. Is he saying that they are on payroll and not working? Or just working longer than initially agreed? Also, is he staying and managing a property illegally without the proper permissions from labour and immigration or is it just the optics that Mr. Gordon doesn’t like? I need more info to understand what the problem with this is.

  5. lol what!? says:

So because he was a police chief he shouldn’t be allowed to buy property as a private citizen? Anybody can buy property anywhere once they have the money for it. What exactly is to be done about this?
I do agree though that I don’t like the fact that every single police chief we get has to be a white man from the UK. I find it hard to believe that not one local cop is capable of being chief. What is the police chief doing that no black person is capable of?

And who are you Gordon and why are you here.
He has more right to be here than you .His descendants aren’t destined to be standing in line for handouts or take up residence in one of our many prisons His investments are assets. We need more like him if the VI is to return to a civility as it was prior to the invasion of the cursed garrots. BVI is his territory!!!

We did have a local police commissioner back in the 90’s, which, if memory serves, didn’t work out very well except for some segments of the local population.

Is this the same Julian Gordon that had an issue with those persons that received residency and belongers in 2019? Is this the same Julian Gordon who has a recorded history stemming since at least the 70s against expats? And finally, is this the same Julian Gordon who is married to an expat? Life is really funny.

How long did he work as Police Commisioner if it was for 5 years then he can become a belonger and this is the only way he can sit on a board.

Any one that has ever worked with the former police commissioner would understand the wealth of knowledge that this man brings to any board. He provides valuable input for the betterment of these territories and his personality is amazing. Additionally, he does NOT receive any stipend from the local Red Cross Board and has already contributed significantly to the local charity with his wealth of knowledge and expertise. He simply just wants to give back.

    J.Gordon,
Are you sick in the head? The man retired from the police force and if he choses as a private citizen to make Tortola his home you have a problem with that.

Mr. Gordon, didn’t your wife came here on contract to work as a Magistrate? Her contract expired and she is still here? Stop being s three faced hypocrite. The comissioner and any other contracted retired officer have a right to reside here if they wish. We are a democratic society. So Julian cut out your bull s**t. If you don’t have anything sensible to say stfu. Its people like you who will take us backward to the dark ages.

If the former Comish has met the legal requirements for residency, and is of good character, then what is the issue?

Why don’t Mr. Gordon comment on those from other Caribbean islands that threaten us or try to scam us in foolish ways?

  17. Eagle says:

It’s funny how they all want to stay in the BVI when they want to label the the BVI as a bad place. Is it worst than where they all come from?

So, if he’s living here legally and being a law-abiding citizen, what is the problem?! I don’t get it!

  21. This is for you Gordon says:

Hate to say it Gordon but you need to shut your ignorant bush man mouth up. Just who the heck you think you are? You don’t own the Island. The Ex police Commissioner and anyone can live anywhere they choose to after retirement. Do you realize how stupid and ignorant you sound? Here we are in 2023 and you are still stuck deep in the dense bushes

Are you stupid or what. You sound like a TRUE NEGRO RACIST. SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE TRYING TO STAY RELEVANT. THE MAN CAN LIVE WHEREVER HE CHOOSES TO. I’M AT MY WITS END WITH THE LEVEL OF THE EVERYDAY STUPIDITY.

  24. Meh Son says:

The ignorance in this article. You think a $900 or a few thousand dollars stipend for a person who was the chief of police in the Territory is not good value for money? That’s a bargain for the BVI and if you question the need for national security expertise on the board, just look at the last MD for the Ports and recent Premier (Curfew Toy).

In a small community like this it is better that the COP comes from elsewhere. Not necessarily the UK , but elsewhere.

Same with the DPP. Why is she currently sitting on half a dozen cases arising from the COI without taking action?

Meanwhile , some of those accused in those cases are running their usual racist smears against the COP and others in an effort to discredit the accusers.

We all know who I am talking about.
